Missing piece to my master link?!

I was lubing my chain this morning and as per usual I looked for the master link so I knew what a full rotation of the chain was, but I couldn't find the master link.
I eventually found that this was because the master link clip was gone..
I'm assuming this is very, very bad?

No more riding till you get another link and safety wire it. Make sure you put the open end away from the direction of travel (is this correct?). Or get a masterlink that can be riveted.

I think I'm gonna go with a riveting master link this time.. Those are better, right?

Varies. I think if I knew I'd be taking the chain off or whatever often, I'd use a clip style. If you over flare the rivet style, you will need to start again. You basically need no special tools to remove and install a clip style.

Better? Sure, if the install is done properly. Otherwise, they are worse.

Hmm I might go with a clip style again then.
Is there a tutorial of some sort that shows how to properly safety wire a master link?

I would be concerned about where the link went. Even if it as on the wrong way it is not likely to come off in normal use, suggesting it was stolen ( or that you are ahead of someone in the office promotion race )

no safetywire means its not staying on.

i use only clips now. if i don't remember to safety wire it shut, it is gone in a day. usually only happens if i forgot and get above 80mph... i think its the speed that the chain takes the corner of the front sprocket at that does it.

Weird I have had clips only since 1968 and never had one come off. Maybe it is something about putting them on? I get everything lined up flat in the grooves and snick it in with a pair of slipjoint pliers between the pin and the back of the clip. That minimizes any stretching and zero twist.
I also clean the chain in situ so they generally only get used once

well theres the problem! i thought you were supposed to install clips using bubblegum and tweezers?

seriously though,
how else are you supposed to install a clip? you put the link wall on the pins, push it as far as it goes with the grips, then install the clip and snap it on using the grips again. i have had a few clips last longer. but when i safetywire it, it does not come off. one way you are trusting the spring of the metal clip to hold tight. the other way you are trusting a piece of metal not to snap in half. i would rather push the limit to it snapping rather than the limit being it gets a little bit loose and falls off.

Oh I have seen people put the closed end on and try to pry the open end over the pin and try to take them off with a screwdriver under the middle of the prong trying to "unhook" the open end from the groove.
Not everybody works the way you and I do

I have a clip. I used pliers to put them on and followed DID instructions. Reached above 120. Clip still there.

You train one of these to use pliers and he refits the clip on the move.

I just got no faith in them. I have some that stayed on, others that when mia after some time, and others that vanished into thin air the next day. YMMV

I got a new clip for now and plan on safety wiring it as soon as I can (afford to purchase the necessary wire/tool)
