Jetting for K&N Pods

Hello,

This is my first post here, although I've been a long-time lurker. Nice to meet all of you

Anyways, I have a 1994 Ninjette that I bought this past summer. I bought some K&N pod air filters to replace the airbox, and re-jetted the bike accordingly. I have Keihin #110 mains, and 3 washers under each needle.

Here's the issue: Under acceleration as the bike passes through 5-6K RPM, the bike sounds like it's "coughing" through the intake. It's more of a "bogging" feeling, as opposed to a "cutting out" feeling that it would have if it was lean. For example, when I first bought the bike it had the common mid-range stumble caused by the lean-from-factory jetting, which I fixed. This "bogging" feels nothing like what it was doing when I know for a fact it was lean, which makes me believe the bike is jetted too rich.

Some people at N250RC feel that the bike is too lean as opposed to too rich, but I don't know. After the 5-6K bogging, the bike pulls hard under WOT. Also, the exhaust is VERY stinky and I get about 220 miles to the tank. My elevation is 900 feet above sea level, and I have stock exhaust.

Thanks in advance for the help

You are going to need new needles to run without an airbox. Factory Pro, K&N etc.

Really? I've never heard this before. I know lots of the guys on N250RC just buy the jets and use the washers and they all get their jetting spot-on.

Yeah I do plan on keeping the stock exhaust, since I really value my centerstand . In my limited experience with jetting though, it's my understanding that if you have the bike WOT and it's pulling hard, that means that your main jet is probably correct. When I give it WOT it does pull hard. It feels like my problem is in the mid-range only, so I guess I'l mess around with 4 washers under each needle, then try it with only 2 washers since I'm still not sure if it's rich or lean.

Thanks for the help guys

A good pointer to whether you're rich or lean is to slightly shut the throttle just as you reach the 'bog down' point, if the bike responds well, you're probably on the rich side.

Thank you! I will try that out as soon as the rain lets up.

not trying to jack a thread, but would this same thing be needed if you get a K&N drop filter for the OEM air box?

No you don't have to re-jet.

Agreed about the needles. I got a Yoshi pipe and k&N pod filters, I shim the stock needles up to 4 shims and still won't run right, then I swap the 4 shims to K&N needles and its spot on. The needle shape are different between stock and K&N's. The K&N's needles are more taper and slender towards the tip and therefor flows more efficient and more fuel. You probably could shim it up to 5 on stock needles and get the same results.

I run 115 main jet which is tiny bit more then the biggest jet (114) provided by K&N and its a blast to ride at the upper rpm range.

I'm located in CA so my jetting range only applied to my area, if you live in different altitude and humidity, chances are, your jetting will be different then mine.

Also swap out the pilot jet for a bigger size and it help with the cold start and idle problems that all Ninja suffers.

Take the shims off your needles and see how she does. Add them 1 at a time to see which way it goes. IMO aftermarket needles don't live up to the hype.
