I thought I'd throw this in here My cat Chairman Meow (He's a ragdoll) is my baby. I always have to let him out to run around the backyard for a good 30 minutes a day. I got a call today to come into work, so after school (around 2pm) I ran home, changed, and since my cell phone was almost dead I plugged it in and left it. Right before I left I let Chairman out to run around and Ma B said she'd get him (which usually just involves finding him and he knows to come back in on his own)...

... So I get home from work at about 9pm and no Chairman (He ALWAYS greets me at the door). Turns out while he was out back he found a new buddy (a baby rattlesnake!). He got bit and is at the cat hospital. He has to stay overnight on an IV and have his blood checked every couple of hours. I have to wake up in about 6 hours to pick him up (He's doing a lot better).

The lesson?

Chairman almost died (which I wouldn't be able to accept)
The anti-venom alone is $600 and everything else is a good $300-$400.
I guess the whole process is incredibly painful and stressful (poor kitty )

The doctor said snakes start to come out a lot this time of year and in fact at the same time 2 other dogs that showed up at the hospitalfor the same reason (snake bites). So if you have indoor/outdoor cats or dogs be careful! Try to keep long grass and brush trimmed down and keep an eye out along fence lines for snakes.

Sorry to hear of Chairman's condition. Hope he makes a full and speedy recovery and will be back home soon... safe, sound and back to normal.

I can't imagine losing my cat, either, but know one day the inevitable will happen. That's the most suckiest part of owning a pet.

good juju thoughts to the Chairman!

Hope your cat gets better TJ. Good luck to Chairman

As for me, I'm a Bengal Cat.

You look wild, but deep down, you're really quite sweet.
You are curious about the world around you, and you love to explore.

You liked to swim and climb trees as a kid... and probably still do!
You are confident and energetic. You are ready to take on the world.

good juju thoughts to the Chairman!
My first cat, Tick Tock, was the runt of the litter and I had to hand-feed her for weeks or she would have surely perished. I had her for 16 years and she was the best cat anyone could have. She once even got between me and a huge German Shepard trying to "protect" me when a friend brought the dog into the house unannounced. At 16 years old and starting to show her advanced years she developed a tumor on her hind leg. I took her to the vet every week for months for steroid shots that made her feel much better, but eventually they did no good. When it became obvious she was feeling pain I took her to the vet and he euthanized her while I held her in my arms, purring away the whole time. It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do and I'm tearing up as I write this remembering what a great companion she was to me for so many years. I still have her collar and ID tag decades later and just can't seem to get rid of them.
I never wanted another cat after Tick Tock passed away, but when my mother died last year I adopted her cat Jet since the poor little guy had nowhere else to go. He cried the whole way to his new home and hid under the bed for weeks before he felt secure enough to explore his new surroundings. Now he acts like he owns the place and although he has a much different personality than my first cat (he's only 3 years old and a juvenile delinquent) we've already become a team.
I don't think you fully appreciate the effect that small creature has on your life until it's no longer a part of it. Hope you two have a lot more years left to enjoy each other's company.
And best wishes for a speedy recovery to the Chairman.

Thanks all! I just picked him up about half an hour ago and he's acclimating well. He wants outside again already I couldn't sleep at all last night and was anxious to get him back home. I'm kind of bummed at the expense though $1,600 was the total!

Poor kitty doesn't realize any of it, but I suppose it's better that way

Not cool man, really not cool to say something like that at all let alone in a thread for/by/of cat lovers.

I took the quiz and got bengal cat. I like them and maybe one day I'll have one. for now I don't have any animals cause of my apartment, but still get to see my parent's pets which are 3 cats and a dalmatian. They used to have more but as the years go by they pass away one by one and they just don't really have the urge to have large numbers of animals anymore.

You Are a Norwegian Forest Cat

You are both athletic and adventurous.
You dream of climbing the highest mountain and surfing the biggest waves.
While you are active and spirited, you are also sweet and cuddly.
You're very family oriented, and you love to be around people.

Sounds like the kinda cat I'd like to have. Probably won't have a cat of my own for a few years, but I'd actually like to get a Bengal. Or better yet, some kind of bobcat/domestic hybrid.

This is making me miss the cats of my youth I get to see one every once in a while. My friend adopted her when my Dad moved to IL.

What the hell, here's some pix:

Lilly:

Sleeping on her Uncle Zim (new 'owner') long before she found out she was moving in with him:

BTW glad to hear Chairman is home safe VeX.

Seriously... a cat using a toilet? How did you train it to do that? And does it flush?

You can train them to flush pretty easily, actually. The problem is that they rarely associate going to the toilet with the flushing afterward, and they'll just flush the toilet all day when they feel like it.

Hows America and their water storage?

Over here, we're running very low and have water restrictions like no tomorrow, for example only watering plants at certain times of the days, <4min showers, rain water tanks etc.

Its not that bad here, but probably because Im near the largest group of freshwater lakes on the planet

I was just down in florida and they're having a freshwater problem. They"re only allowed to water their lawn certain days of the week is all I can remember. Maybe someone here from florida can chime in on this with more detail.

I am glad Chairman will make a recovery!

You Are a Ragdoll Cat

You are extremely cute and cuddly. You are downright adorable.
Your personality matches your exterior. You are very laid back and sweet.

You don't really like the outdoors. You prefer to stay inside where it's cozy.
Luckily, you are the perfect houseguest. You are polite and obedient.

What Breed of Cat Are You?

I think my cat Loki was a Ragdoll... He was a stray I picked up...and had to give away because I moved into another house where there was going to be an Akita mix and a Boxer... Loki would have been Kitty snack... Then it turned out that the Akita was going to be an outside/garage dog and the boxer was finding another home... I could have kept my cat... ah well.. He went to a good home..

You Are a Maine Coon Cat

You tend to be loving and playful around your family and friends.
But when you're around strangers you tend to be a bit reserved.

You are intuitive. You understand human emotions well.
You do best when you are around people. You don't like being left alone.

Wow that is definetly me to a T.
That was a very interesting survey.

Yeah Loki looks very ragdollish It's tricky because there is about 3-4 breeds that look VERY simliar. Thanks again to all those with kind words. Chairman seems to be back to his normal self. He's eager to go outside (which isn't going to happen anymore ). To add to that it's raining right now and he STILL wants out I snapped some battle scar pics as well.

Chairman looking cranky

The paw that was bitten (and consequently shaved)

It's hard to get a picture, but his neck is shaved and something was on his neck ( I don't believe it was the IV, but I'm no doctor ). When he looks upward there's a huge patch of missing fur

This looks rather funny, but I think this is where they had to shave an put the IV. It looks like he's walking around with a big furry boot on now.

Well you guys are in the middle of the worst drought ever, aren't you? With the constant news of all the fires over there I'm not surprised you have to ration water. Over here we just keep wasting it like there's no tomorrow. What ticks me off the most is so many people are in the habit of using bottled water even though we have some of the cleanest water on the planet right out of our kitchen taps. And then all those plastic bottles end up in the huge plastic trash island in the Pacific. I hear it's as big as the state of Texas now. Pretty soon we'll be able to walk to OZ!

Hit the nail on the head over here. That would be cool if you Americans and us Aussies were able to walk to each other's country, save a heck of a lot money!

We made a cat play house today!! Our cats are indoors due to coyotes, Bald eagles and feral cats. The bald eagles during certain times of the year sit outside in a tree in our back yard!! Swoop! there goes my kitty. So to keep them safe , they are indoor only.
We have a dog run. The dogs act as if we are killing them to have them in the dog kennel. So it has become a storage pit. no good.
We moved it today and covered the top with mesh. It is decorated with big tree parts and plants!! They were pretty stoked and weirded out at the same time. They can be outside and safe. It is a kitty jungle
will finish decorating it and post pics!!
