[cycleworld.com] - Triumph Acquires Oset, Expands Into Kid eMoto

To help expand its reach into the motocross and enduro segments, Triumph has acquired Oset Bikes, the youth electric-motorcycle brand.

Triumph now owns Oset Bikes, a manufacturer of entry-level electric off-road bikes. Most are trials style bikes for kids under 8, but this 24.0 is fit for adult trials training while not annoying the neighbors. (Triumph Motorcycles/)In July 2021, Triumph Motorcycles announced the development of motocross and enduro bikes as the British brand looked to expand outside of its modern standard, adventure, roadster/supersport, and cruiser lineups.

The Hinckley firm recently brought in some legendary names to help develop the prototypes, including MX GOAT Ricky Carmichael and five-time enduro world champion Iván Cervantes.

Now Triumph is further expanding its offerings with an electric motorcycle lineup for the kids. No initial development is needed; rather, Triumph announced the acquisition of Oset Bikes, a UK-based company catering to new generations of motorcyclists through its seven-bike lineup of off-road electric platforms, including trial bikes.

Triumph says the purchase of Oset Bikes helps fuel its core philosophy, “For the Ride,” which is all about inspiring new and experienced riders alike to get out there and ride more. (Triumph Motorcycles/)“We are excited about the opportunity of joining forces with Oset Bikes: a dynamic brand that has been encouraging children into motorcycling for many years and have been at the forefront of developing electric trials bikes for fun and competition,” Triumph CEO Nick Bloor says. “While the two brands will continue working independently, Triumph and Oset will collaborate on new state-of-the-art products to inspire young riders into off-road riding, across the segments that Triumph and Oset will have a presence in, drawing on their respective strengths to build the best bikes in the world.”

Oset was launched in 2004 by Ian Smith, who wanted to build a capable starter bike for his then 3-year-old son Oliver. In its 18th year, Oset has now sold more than 40,000 electric motorcycles in over 25 countries, with each machine featuring Oset’s in-house-developed electric powerplants.

The 2022 lineup ahead of the Triumph acquisition includes:
  • 12.5 ECO (3–5 years old)
  • 12.5 Racing (3–5)
  • 16.0 Racing (5–7)
  • 20.0 (8+)
  • 20.0 Racing MKII Lithium (8+)
  • 24.0 Racing (Adult)
  • MX-10 (4–7)
“When we built that first ‘garage’ bike for my son Oliver, I had no idea that it would lead to this moment,” says Ian Smith, Oset Bikes CEO. “We are all very excited for what the future holds for Oset as part of the Triumph family. The Oset brand will remain as Oset and will continue to serve the trials and off-road motorcycling community. We are now better positioned to develop and innovate across our range while enjoying the security of scale and market position Triumph can offer Oset.”

For Triumph, the acquisition plays to its strategy of entering the off-road segment. Both Oset and Triumph can share each other’s knowledge, helping growth for both brands while influencing the younger riders.
