Oil Filter Bypass Valve

Thanks to the handy write-up by kkim, I just did my first oil change in preparing the bike for winter storage. My only question is in regards to the oil filter bypass valve that is located inside the filter mounting bolt. I didn't give it much of a thought as I have never seen it mentioned in any of the DIY oil change posts and it's not mentioned as a maintenance item in the owner's manual. There is a section in the service manual however, that mentions how to disassemble the bolt to clean it and check the bypass valve for any damage. I noticed this after I had already done the oil change.

Just wondering if this is really necessary and if anyone else does this when they change the oil and filter? I did unfortunately drop the bolt onto the garage floor a couple of times when I was sitting down due to all the oil on my fingers and hands. I really doubt that would have done anything to it though and after I filled the bike with new oil and started it up everything seemed to run fine with no visible leaks and the check oil light never came on.

1. I've changed the oil 3-4 times. Never paid attention to it.

2. Just wiping down the bolt with a rag and making sure there's nothing in the threads is good enough.

3. The oil light should come on every time you start up the bike. And go away after 2-3 seconds. If it doesn't come on, the bulb needs to be replaced.
