[motorcycle.com] - 2017 Ducati Monster 939 Spied

Ducati’s Monster 821 has been overshadowed by the more recent introductions of the ultra-successful Scrambler lineup and the range-topping Monster 1200. New spy photos shot in Italy suggest that the 821 may be on its way out.

Earlier we reported on the addition of an air-cooled 803cc Monster to Ducati’s line, which will fill the bottom-end of the Monster range. We’ve heard rumors that it’s been difficult tuning the liquid-cooled 821 motor to meet the required Euro 4 regulations, and cramming in the 937cc lump from the Hypermotard 939 would be a simple swap and solution (since the Hyper 939 was preceded by a Hyper 821, this may have been the plan all along). This will allow Ducati to move the middle Monster further upmarket, resulting in what we believe is the Monster 939 seen in these spy photos.

Generally speaking, the Monster 939 appears quite similar to the potentially outgoing 821. The biggest visual distinction is the addition of the attractive single-sided swingarm from the existing Monster 1200, an upmarket move made possible by the introduction of the 803cc air-cooled Monster.

We already know Ducati will be introducing a new Supersport 939 at EICMA, and we expect it will share a lot of the same components with the Monster 939. A photo of an S version of the Supersport 939 leaked from its private reveal at World Ducati Week, and it’s likely the Monster 939 will also receive an S trim level with high-quality Öhlins suspension.

We can expect Ducati’s full complement of electronic rider aids, including standard ABS, traction control and ride modes. The Monster 821 retails in America for $11,499, so this more powerful version with a single-sided swingarm will likely have a base MSRP around $12.5k.

More details will be known as we get closer to this fall’s moto show season of Intermot and EICMA.

Monster 1200 Strada?

Also nabbed by the same photographer in Italy is an apparent spin-off from the Monster 1200, a revision that adds some additional comfort in the form of more relaxed ergonomics, a plusher seat and the addition of a windscreen. We guess it might be called a Monster 1200 Strada.

Again, more details will become available during the moto show season this fall.
