Some more progress!!

Some more progress. I'm headed to Deals Gap to ride the Tail of the Dragon this week and I may just get it ready before I leave!!!
I got the ignition on the motor wired up. It has spark, but it is weak. Tomorrow I will check the basics: plug wire condition, pick up gap, etc. There are a lot of unknowns on this bike since I have never run this motor before and most of the accessories have been pieced together from different people. I did shave the rotor a while back. Taking the weight off should let things spin up quicker:

Since the motor is a stressed member (part of the frame) I pressed out al the rubber motor mount bushings and machined up some solid aluminum replacements. In the second pic you can also see the top front motor mount or "head stay":

I still have to make some tubular links to connect the front lower mounts up to the frame. They will be similar to the lower engine cradle shown below.

The upper rear motor mount is a piece of tube with a plug welded in each end. I then welded some tabs on it. basically it moves the rear mount on the frame out and don without me cutting the frame. i want to make this bolt in just in case I decide to market this as a kit in the future. I used hollow tube with plugs to save some weight. All steel is 4130 chromemoly:
Tube with plugs welded in:

Tube with plugs welded in and welds ground down 90%:

The welds turned down the rest of the way on the lathe:

Here are the bushings for the rear upper mount on the engine case:

The through bolt hole was bored and tabs tacked on:

Tomorrow i will post a pic of the mount in place. I forgot to take that one! :argh:

Here is my favorite part so far. Too bad it will be totally hidden under the motor. Sometimes things just come out so pretty and I was happy with this one! I used to fab ATV A-Arms and this was similar to what I used to make. I even got to play with my tubing bender for the first time in years. Banshee and RZ motors have 2 large 10mm tapped holes in the bottom of the case for stabilizer links. I made a cradle that bolted into these and ran back to the lower rear motor mount tabs on the frame. More 4130!! I love this stuff!!:

Hopefully my wife keeps on being so patient and I don't wind up here!!!!!!

I am on my way back home from Deals Gap right now. The bikes first ever run was on The Tail of the Dragon. I guessed at the jetting starting point. The bike ran flawlessly....when I could keep the front wheel on the ground. LOL!! I will post some vids and pics tomorrow. I am considering doing these conversions either turn key or as a bolt in kit for those who are interested.

Great adaptation, Vintage Smoke !!!

I would love to better see the three supports of the engine.

IMHO, the lowest one may create some serious stress on the long bolts (hope they are high grade steel).
I say so because the connection to the frame is still a pivot and some moment is passed on the bolts-crankcase.

Aren't 60 HP too much for that frame, brakes, chain and tires???

Did you keep the factory muffler?

Here are a couple posted by one of the guys at the annual 2 stroke gathering at the Deals Gap hotel on The tail of the Dragon. They're short and un-edited. The one video I wanted to post is not on the CD someone burned for me. I am still trying to get it. Keep in mind that this is a fresh motor and I never went beyond 1/2 throttle in the vid. I was still welding one of the motor mounts 2 hours before I left on a 13 hour drive to get there. I started the motor for the first time and loaded the bike on the truck 1/2 hour later. I literally guessed at the jetting and never even adjusted the mixture screws. I just got lucky that it ran so well. The needles in the Kehin carbs I am using were mystery Mikuni needles I had laying around. I think they were left overs from when i jetted a friends CB500. I am still recovering from the weekend and the week prior thrashing to get things ready. I think I have had a total of 20 hours sleep since last Wednesday. That includes driving 1500 miles this weekend. I have a bunch of catching up to do at the shop. As soon as I get things squared away i will post some update pics on things like motor mounts. Some things were done in a temporary fashion to make it to the show. The exhaust was originally fit to an RZ350 so i need to do some work on the pipe to tuck it up. It dragged pretty bad on right turns. I had used a Banshee thumb throttle because the carbs I had were complete from carbs to throttle including cables and i didn't have time to splice the cables into the stock ninja throttle. I kind of like it though so i may keep it. LOL

looks like a fun project. to be honest, once I started wanting a little more go, my first thought was a 2 stroke, I had a little two stroke goped back in the day that I loved working on. Doesn't work well when you live in the city though, I'd attract way too much attention.

A proper 2 stroke exhaust WITH a silencer is a little loud, but with a silencer it isn't too bad. This exhaust was origionally on a track bike and doesn't have one. I just ran out of time before the trip. It will be getting one though. It was so loud that the guys at The Gap were able to hear me at least a half mile away even through the trees. It did sound awesome, but no one would want to ride behind me and i couldn't afford all the tickets!!

Let me know, I know all the guys in the banshee world. You can get a magura throttle and a twist throttle cable for banshee carbs, also get a hold of shearer pipes he might be able to.help on the pipes

The pipe actually works really nice. It is really meaty in the mid range and revs as far as I have the nerve to go. I will probably just cut, rotate, and re-weld it in one or two spots to tuck it up better. I am kind of liking the twist throttle too. I grew up riding ATV's so it is not foreign to me. It also makes for some really funny faces when people notice it!! LOL

Cool project. I had an RZ back in the day. The single pipe is interesting, any reason you didn't use two expansion chambers?

Would you be able to ride it daily? Being a 2 stroke. like do you pre mix the gas or have dual tanks or something? I'm thinking about getting/building a 2 stroke supermoto and am worried about mixing gas and maintenance/durability as a daily driver

Oh man, I have an RD350, not on the road by any stretch but a long term project type thing. Me and a friend have wondered about throwing the banshee motor in, thanks for the wealth of info and the video with that sweet sweet two stroke sound. I hear the same from my friend who rides an RD250 though about police attention/tickets.
