[visordown.com] - Warning over misleading licence and tax sites

MISLEADING websites are tripling the cost of applying for road tax or a driving licence, according to the government.

The sites exaggerate their services and supply nothing more than a completed paper application form, according to the DVLA.

Links to the sites can appear high in the results generated by online search engines.

It’s the second time this year the DVLA has warned that only the official GOV.UK site should be used to apply online for a driving licence or vehicle tax.

The Agency said today: ‘DVLA has been made aware of several websites offering a check and send service for driving licence or vehicle tax applications. Some sites exaggerate the nature of the services they provide, or deliberately underplay the services that people can get for free or at a lower cost from official sources. These services are in no way affiliated with DVLA. You may come across these websites in the sponsored links or paid-for results section when using online search engines. The Office of Fair Trading has ruled that websites which charge additional fees for services are not acting illegally.

‘These websites will claim to offer value-added services to ensure your application is correct before you send it to DVLA. However, using this service will mean you can end up paying as much as 3 times the normal price for your driving licence, and all you will receive is a paper application form that has been completed for you.’
