Engine dies @ +70 mph.
Riding in the cold.. mid-30's. No problem starting and warming up. Cruising on the expressway doing 70+ mph. The engine suddenly quit; I popped (disengaged) clutch a few times until the engine catch. backfire from unburned gas. Will run alright for awhile then it's dejavu all over again. Arrived at destination ok. Coming home, I took it easy, just maybe 50s & 60s. Never did die. I am reluctant to adjusting the carbs because I'd be adjusting it again in spring for warm weather riding. Haven't checked the plugs. Bike's parked outdoors and it's freezing. I am guessing carbs are too lean above 7K rpm. Anyone else has this scenario happen to their ride? BTW, have 2 bros slip-ons.
Bike's a 2007. Meng |

couple things come to mind... are you sure you have enough gas in the tank? seriously.
also, could be a fuel starvation problem... pop the gas cap and see if it helps with the problem (vacuum builds up if the gas cap doesn't vent properly). check fuel filter to make sure it's not partially clogged which would impeded fuel flow, perhaps just enough, so it's a problem at high rpm. Sounds like the issue many of us have that appears to be from a vacuum forming in the gas tank, which usually happens when the tank is cooled. Open the lid next time and turn it over until gas starts flowing again.

Engine dies at 70+
@ Kelly, thanks never thought of the tank not venting. Had just 14 miles on the odo since last gas up.
@ Jet, will do if I am stopped next time 'cause been having minor prob. with the clutch switch. I know the bike is in neutral, but the neutral light is off and the bike can't be started unless the clutch is pulled. I've been diddling with the switch lately. I thought the vibration at speed makes the switch AFU. Will be checking on the tank venting. Thanx. Meng |

Do you have an aftermarket in-line fuel filter installed?
