Odd Squeal on engine start ?

Hi Ninja 300 team,

I have a versys-X 300, which uses the same engine as the Ninja 300, so I thought I’d ask here if anyone had experienced a similar issue or heard of such.

I have over 4000 miles on my x300, it spends a lot of time at 9000rpm on my commute to work.

It has a fairly random odd noise on startup sometimes. Only happens when the engine is cold.

It sounds like belt squeal on a car, it’s very brief, for like a second or two, just as the engine catches. It only happens very randomly. First time it happened it worried me, but bike has run a couple of thousand miles since then without any issues or any noticeable change in the engine performance or anything else.

Anyone come across something similar or have experience if this noise on a Ninja or X300 etc ?

Thanks

Does it sound like this? Noise at about 13 seconds in when the bike starts. I came to the conclusion that it was just the tank venting some vapors when the fuel pump first fired, as I couldn't get the noise to happen if I opened the gas cap before starting the bike, IIRC. It's been a while.

Squeal when starting up sounds familiar.

The early Honda VFRs (400, 500, 750) used to have all sorts of problems with their starter clutches. Often the starter clutch would have a crack in its housing which would make it hard for the three starter clutch "sprag" rollers to grip (to bite down and hold) the crankshaft when you press the starter button.

As this failure (a crack growing in the starter clutch housing) developed the VFR's starter clutch would go through various stages, from working fine but making some noise, to working occasionally while making more noise, to finally making a lot of noise but not starting the engine at all.

Thanks for the feedback. Re the video, that sound is similar to what I get. Someone on another forum has suggested it’s due to the cold on the starter bearing & I’ve found a bunch of threads on all kinds of bikes for this issue. So I suspect it may be that.

I've had my starter make a dry bearing type squeal just as I release the key. I removed the starter, took it apart and lubed all the parts that needed lubing and it got quiet.
