Is this bike worth the chance?

1995 Ninja 600 $450

http://skagit.craigslist.org/mcy/3749602229.html

Just talked to the guy

Douche/squid tore up the bike cosmetically, stepson got it somehow then didn't do anything with it for a year, stepfather now wants it gone.

Says the bike runs
Can't shift into second
Bike won't stay running/charged on its own
He has the title
26k miles

Meeting him at 11am tomorrow

I have experience with cosmetic, non-engine mechanical, and electrical on my pregen and an R6.

Any deal breakers I should look for? Or questions I should ask?

If you just want some good experience on the mechanical side, it would probably be worth it for that. Doubt I would give more than $300 for it though; eighteen years old, massive work needed, you may never get it to run again. Hell, he should be paying you to take it.

Seriously though, if you just want something to tool around with, then check it out, make a decision in person, and then offer what you think is a fair price. He wants $450 so offer $250 and try to settle around $300 or so.

Thanks for the reply, I'll definitely use that information.

Does anyone know what parts are similar/usable between the pregen 250s and a 95 600?

id try to get it for around 200-340 range. The clean title helps worst comes to worse you could part it and get 200 for the frame and title. Then just turn it into s street fighter

With the ad saying "milage" and "streat" I would already be wary. Terrible basic spelling is a deal breaker on any craigslist ad I look at.

If you can get it for $300, I would definitely do it. You may well get a totally functional bike out of the deal, but if not, you'll have a nice project and something to learn on, and a clean title to sell the frame with. It's ALMOST zero risk if you can get it down to a few hundred.

If I had a garage, I wouldn't think twice about it.

Good luck!

Get it for less. Sounds like the guy doesn't know anything about it. Turn it into an acting skit almost. Practice a few lines where you say things like. "Well if this thing is even salvageable it is going to need a complete rebuild. I am going to need to go through every nut, bolt, link bearing, you name it before i can even get an idea if it is worth me putting the time into it. Hell i might just have to junk it in the end. I'm thinking $200 and I haul it away is about as much as i can risk"

just for an idea.

point out things that are wrong with the bike to the guy and then tell him how big of a PITA it is to fix.

If i had some spare change and time to work on it i would definitely snag it for 300ish just for a fun project. If it doesn't work out you might be able to part out a few of the piece to try and come out even in the end.

good luck keep us posted.

i'll put it this way, the registered frame by itself is worth $300-400. on top of that you have a potentially feasible engine, lots of accessories, even some body work and lights. this is a steal of a deal.

Have title and keys in hand. Bike should be picked up by a friend tonight.

There was rust in the tank from ancient gas sitting in it. I'm hoping that's a new development and didn't fubar the engine yet.

Even if it did, I got the bike for $280. I think I could have gotten it for close to $200, but the guy was really nice.

Good deal. You definitely made out. When I was looking for a clean titled frame for a 750, the least I found was 500. I bet all you have to do is clean the fuel train and then the usual stuff when you buy a sitting bike. Wish I had a deal like that around me!

Nice! Congrats!

Depending on your schedule, I'm guessing we'll see you riding it before too long.

I'm starting an internship on Monday and still continuing my part time job. 60 hour work weeks for the next three months, should be exciting. Mix in Fiance and this bike and you get utterly no time.

Ideally, I'll lend my 250 to a friend and ride the 600. We're both so excited. He's wanted a bike for years, then my friend was given one to fix up, and a year later I got one. He wanted to kill us a lot. :P

I'll create a restore thread for major updates.

Thanks for the help!
