RIP, brotha.

I saw this thread earlier, but it honestly made me soooo bummed that I away off the forum, especially after reading the severity of his condition. My condolences to his family.

Alex joined the boards around the same time I did, and we posted in a lot of the same threads. I didn't know him personally, but you could tell he was definitely a genuine guy. Even under criticism, he was always friendly and helpful. You are missed!

I know this is kind of late, but there will be services Aug 16th at 11AM in Mobile, AL. After that they will be taking him back home to his country for funeral services.

Just found this thread. He seemed like a pretty friendly guy and he helped me out on a few issues. My condolences to his family.

The question that keeps running through my head is "how did he suffer such a horrible brain injury with a full-face helmet"? Does anyone know if his helmet was an "older one" (older than 6 years), or if it didn't fit him correctly? I'm interested in learning more about what a full face helmet can and can't realistically do and what it did or didn't do in this situation. The overall research of accidents and helmets (which helmets protect the best, and worst) is a hot topic for me. Thx.

A full face helmet, while the most protective option, can't prevent 100% of head injuries. You'll want a good high rated helmet. DOT is the minimum while striving for SNELL or ECE or other safety ratings is better. With helmets, more $$$ does not equal more protection. Full face helmets are like seatbelts and airbags, Yes they will save your life in many instances but it can't prevent all damage to you.

I highly doubt his helmet didn't fit him properly. He was a very safety gear oriented guy.

A sudden stop (change of direction) on a immovable object , doesn't matter what type of helmet you have, something has to give.

About the helmet thing. I remember reading that his eye socket got messed up right? So maybe something broke the visor off and impacted through his visor. Just throwing out guesses. It interests me too but I doubt we will ever know what exactly happened.

Just ride safe folks. Especially going through intersections.

The least protective direction of impact with a helmet is full frontal face, because at that angle the only impact-absorbing foam contact with the skull is that just above the eyes, along the forehead. If there was an incursion from part of the car such as the edge of a fender or mirror that entered the visor area then the helmet would offer no protection whatsoever.

I wish I could get the time off from work to attend the memorial ride Sunday, but was unable to.

I've been thinking about this tragedy from the first post of this thread, and am truly saddened that someone so close to the beginning of their life had it taken from him, especially under these circumstances.

Bone is softer than metal and the composite material of helmets, I'm guessing that was the first point of impact on the helmet and nothing to due with the visor.

It's usually the brain bouncing around in the skull that does most of the damage, that's how the expression motorcyclists = organ donors hows come about.

Safety gear only goes so far in protection.

i have a theory on what happened but i don't want to talk about it right now.

all i'll say is that people saying if they rode a scooter they would be better off are wrong in this case. they way the chick ran the stop sign at 35-40mph you could slow down to 10mph and still receive serious trauma.

Wow, this is shocking and sad news, my condolences to his family and friends. I didn't know him personally but, I did enjoy reading his posts and videos - and sharing in this part of his life that he obviously loved.

I just finished reading through the whole thread and once again, I'm impressed by the compassion and respect of the members of this board. We all know the dangers we face every time we throw a leg over. We take that risk knowingly because we truly love riding and hopefully this event will not convince anyone to give up riding. Personally, I feel like riding even more - trying to enjoy every minute of my life as best I can - with this reminder of how fragile and special life is, he will be in my thoughts and actions while riding.

This is terrible news. RIP.

I would appreciate any further details about this collision (don't want to call it an "accident"). Name of the female driver. Whether legal action is taken.

I'm still new to this forum, but I just came across this thread and read it all the way through from beginning to end...
RIP Ethioknight -- I never even knew the guy (this all happened before I joined), but reading through this thread was kinda heartwrenching.

Now, at least I get all the avatar pictures, with people in full gear cornering on chairs

Terrible news though and I hope Alex's family at least gets some justice for this tragedy. Don't know you, but ride on Ethioknight man!

I've been gone for a while now and started trying to figure out which Alex was being mentioned here and there.

I just can't believe it. All teary and snotty at my computer right now. Will be looking back at the laughs we had in the 'dudes rock' thread. I'm just stunned. Why?? why the **** why??? I'm so angry and heartbroken. To me, he was an example of personal courage, didn't give a hooey if someone didn't like his mohawk but sometimes asked other peoples opinions on here. More because he was interested in what others thought not that it would have changed his personal views. He was kind to me and joked with me. He had the courage to wear gear when some guys his age don't. He had fun and appreciated life.

I can't believe it.

I've always slowed down at every intersection and have missed a t bone once because of it. Alex, you will always keep me safe at every intersection, thank you. Rest in peace on The Big Track. I'll carry you with me, pegs down for you here too.

Ride safe everyone, I never want to read another like this. Don't practice your skills, master them. A bit better every day. People care about you.

looks great Hans, I think Alex would be proud! pretty sharp suit!

I too now have my head on a swivel. I scan every intersection both ways when approaching, and taking off from lights Ill slowly creep while checking each direction, before starting off. Have to be cautious!

Thanks Rahul. You gotta be super careful out there... The number of Idiots on the street is ridiculous... Like a very wise man(my dad) told me, "Every one on the road is stupid, including you, it's your job to protect yourself from them." No offense to anyone...

That's maybe the best way we can remember him. And tell other riders abut him and to be paranoid at intersections etc. There's places and times to get our jollies but not on the regular streets.
I've run a yellow once and I will NEVER do it again, scared the sheet out of myself when I thought about it later. Was really stupid.

You know, it used to be that you only had to worry about the occasional drunk just after dark and worry about more of them after last call. Now, thanks to cell phone txting, we have to look out for "drunks" all the time, any time of day, any car, any person.

could be anything from incompetence, drugs, emotions, physical conditions, distraction, etc.
it does not take much for a person to become "impaired"... and the effect amplifies when they are combined.

even without being impaired people have messed up priorities when it comes to taking responsibility for their own actions...

protect yourself at all times.
