2011 MotoGP Sachsenring Friday practice report—Simoncelli leads, Rossi crashes

San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli avoided the numerous crashes in the morning to stay on top of both sessions; Lorenzo second, Pedrosa third, Hayden sixth, Spies seventh, Edwards 11th , Rossi 12thMarco Simoncelli once again showed that he’s on fire—at least in practice and qualifying—by topping the timesheets in both Friday morning and afternoon sessions at the Sachsenring circuit in Germany. The morning session brought into focus the problems that many riders are having with getting the dual-compound Bridgestone tires to heat up properly in colder conditions, this time on the right side due to the circuit’s dearth of right-hand turns (there are technically only three of them), with Casey Stoner, Valentino Rossi, Dani Pedrosa, and Toni Elias all crashing in the super-fast Turn 11 in the morning session (Elias ignominiously falling twice in the session, the second occurring in the right-hand Turn One). This despite Bridgestone bringing a softer option rear tire with an extra-soft compound on the right side in an attempt to improve warm-up ability in the 59-degree-Fahrenheit ambient conditions in the morning.
