Re-registering a bike?

So I found a 250 I would like to purchase but it has washington plates with expired tags. How would I go about getting it registered in California and how much would it cost? Can I just re-register it or am I going to be paying a ton of money?

Is it originally a CA bike or is it a 49-state bike? If you're registering an out of state bike, I think it needs 7500 miles on it before you can. Don't ask why...

Alright so I can just buy it and register it here and it shouldn't cost me like $28,000 right?

I think it has to have 7,500 or 14,000 to sell in CA by a resident that moved to CA from another state. I doubt you can just buy it because it's over 14,000 miles. Then again, there are a lot of CA-model "50-state" bikes sold in other states, so it may be perfectly registrable. Ask! Cali bikes have extra stickers on the tank.

Call the DMV. It might be a hassle being put on a hold for the longest time, but it's a safer bet than actually buying the bike and finding out you can't legally ride it on Cali roads without paying out the @$$.

Why can't I email the DMV, goddamn. Would that be too efficient for California regulations?

There's some good info on the DMV website:

Here's one link:

http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/fast_facts/ffvr29.htm

That describes that 7,500 mile rule, which it sounds like you're OK with for this particular bike as it has more than that.

The parent page there is here:

http://dmv.ca.gov/vr/os.htm

What I don't know is what happens if the bike owes taxes or registration in the old state, does that have any bearing on what is due to get things up and running here in California. I have purchased an out of state used bike in the past, but registration was current in Illinois at that point, and it wasn't an issue.

When I do the registration fee calculator in the DMV's website i get a total cost of $218. For this calculator its requirement is that the bike was last registered in another state.
