2017 Northeast track day thread NH CT MA RI NY NJ ME VT PA

The NE track day thread is back, now with MORE MORENESS!

GMO- and gluten-free!

It's WAY WAY more fun to do a track day when you hang out with others. So let's try to line up our schedules so we can do that, and make an effort to arrive at the same time so we can pit together.

Lesson learned from last year. After awhile, you can't edit posts. So there's a rolling schedule/attendance thing... from time to time, the schedule will be updated and put into a fresh post.

The current schedule post is here:

https://www.ninjette.org/forums/show...7&postcount=51

All the track info is here....

Palmer Motorsports Park, Palmer, MA
http://www.palmermotorsportspark.com/

There are sound limits at this track. You have been warned. Wasn't a big deal last year but if you've got one of those stupid-loud megaphone exhausts, you might have a really short day.

Palmer is... is... well, just LOOK at it! How can you NOT want to ride here? Massive elevation change including a Laguna Seca-like diving turn.

Super-cool drone video that can't be embedded because it's on Facebook.... worth watching!
https://www.facebook.com/PalmerMotor...4035206287789/

Steely-eyed missile man and TTD instructor Paul Duval gives us a narrated lap:

Link to original page on YouTube.

Track facility update: There is garage space available, rented per bay. You can fit four bikes in a bay. The full garage building is $50/day, while the open-sided "carport" along the pit all is $40/day. Both have power. You're supposed to reserve at the Palmer website: Go here http://palmermotorsportspark.com/events.aspx and click through to find your event. It's pretty casual, so no biggie if you mess up. A shower building is up, but as of 2016 there were permitting issues that prevented it from being used. There's a bathroom trailer with flush toilets but for the most part, it was still porta-potties.

Note: Turn numbers are not consistent. For our purposes, the left hander at the bottom of the hill after pit-out is Turn 2. The Turn 4/5 complex is the climbing left-right S. The diving left-hander is Turn 7. The big banked right-hand carousel is Turn 9, aka The Bowl.

There are rumors this track might be run in reverse someday....

Thompson Speedway, Thompson, CT
http://www.thompsonspeedway.com/

Thompson has garage space with power for rent (2016 price was $25/bike, reservations not needed), showers, fuel on-site ($$$) and is easily the best track for spectators. Fun, point-and-shoot.

Note: It can be tricky to talk about this track because the turn numbers aren't consistently described. The key is that the bridge turn is Turn 5, either direction.

"Normal" clockwise direction, narrated by Ken Condon

Link to original page on YouTube.

"Reverse" counterclockwise (which I think is more fun.... ijs...)

Link to original page on YouTube.

New York Safety Track, Harpersfield, NY

http://www.NYST.com/

Great track overall, with really nice flow and variety.

NYST runs both directions: "Uptown" is counterclockwise, "Downtown" is clockwise.

Showers, but no garages. Word has it that limited power is available and there are rumors of it spreading but I don't know any details. The paddock can be a bit challenging and is very crowded. The lower area is not level and the upper area by the building is nothing but a strip of pavement with people parked on both edges.

Uptown:

Link to original page on YouTube.

Downtown:

Link to original page on YouTube.

New Jersey Motorsports Park, Millville, NJ

http://www.njmp.com/

NJMP hosts MotoAmerica, and is spectator-friendly. I've not done a track day here, but did a couple of parade laps of the Thunderbolt circuit when I saw the late-season MotoAmerica race with Ben a couple of years ago. The track has nice flow and looks like it'd be a hoot at speed. I don't know the garage situation for track days. Heads-up if you're trailering from the north: Getting across the Hudson with a trailer can be expensive, depending on which bridge you use. The farther north you can do it, the better.

Thunderbolt:

Link to original page on YouTube.

Lightning:

Link to original page on YouTube.

Now you have Bohemian Rhapsody stuck in your head. You're welcome.

Nice! Consider doing one of these per year like a do the Mid-Ohio threads. That reminds me, I am late to create that. And some of the other coaches from mid-ohio hit NYST from time to time and say it's a blast. Maybe I can haul with them sometime and catch up with ya'lls again. Maybe even @nickjpass too.

Sooo... what org is running that July 31 Pitt Race Full date? Kevin and I were talking about when to go so it could align with possibly riding with you guys again.

Looks like TPM is running that. Ben might know more. I need to check my schedule... the summer is filling up fast with band stuff. I'm definitely hitting NYST with TTD, and I think Greg (backinthesaddleagain) said he might do it too.

I work weekends #ems

NYST has some power, and there were rumors of it spreading. The 300 series rules are up on their site.

Here is another video of NYST last year.

Nick, IIRC a new member who knows you from the track joined Ninjette, but I can't remember his user name. Who is it? I'd like to tag him.

We need to get dates sorted for Pittrace. Band is heating up and my summer is filling fast. How does that July 31 date look for folks?

July 31 is TPM and I'm planning to be there. Bring your 250s and 300s because there's gonna be some ninja racing that day in addition to the track day. Gonna be a fun day at PittRace

I wish they had a 2 day, like july 30 and 31 or aug 1st, it seems like a bit of a waste to make the drive for 1 day, but ill do what i gotta do! 8.5x20 or 24 cargo hauler will be purchased next month and ill be converting it to have some beds, a small kitchenette, ac (if theres power), and maybe a bathroom. We didnt go the toyhauler route, im just going to build me own.

I agree with the 2 day sentiment as well, but it was surprisingly difficult to get the 2 single days that we have on the schedule in the first place so it is what it is

Heads up on special pricing for the first TTD track day... Two weeks before the price bumps.

Note that due to a town noise ordinance, the track goes hot at noon on Sundays. You still get a full day; they just run it later.

From @ttd via Facebook:

Quote:
Heads up regarding our first trackday this year... Sunday, April 23! Similar to last year, this date will have special pricing and a weather provision. Price right now is just $150 for members... $200 for non members. That price will go up on April 1. As for the weather provision, the day needs to be mostly dry and over 55 degree average. Last year we had awesome weather for this season opener and it SOLD OUT... so register soon!

Understood. I'm seriously considering it because I'm going to get some instruction at the Palmer Memorial Day weekend and want to get some seat time in beforehand. I also want to maximize the budget and grabbing these cheaper days is the best way to do that.

I'm gonna jump on the BoRN sale as soon as it appears, but don't want to get in your way. Are you thinking of Memorial Day weekend? If not, I'll snag it.

Alrighty, figured I'd update my involvement for the season. I'm in for pretty much every njmp day on that list riding with TPM and ACE, I'll be at a few NYST events as well along with both Pitt race events. I'm paid in for the whole season so it's all down to actually getting out there and riding now. Hoping to see y'all at the track this year. I won't be able to ride outside of my set schedule but I am looking forward to riding that schedule

Greg, does tony's price go by rider or bike (can you bring more than one bike)? I might head up to South Carolina to do a day with Dale and his rider next month. I'm trying to get him to met me up north this summer and do Palmer and /or Thompson. He has a full race 600 I might be able to ride and we want to run our old endurance bike for some fun as well as my 1000. If I can get him up north we'll have a bunch of bikes to use.

A friend of mine, Sarah from Rhode Island, is signing up to do Palmer on her Ducati 900 Monster. I told her to go the first track day (Thompson)and watch. I hope you guys can take a few minutes and talk to her. She knows everyone at Gordon's. If I can get Dale up there we will be with her for Palmer. It's a tough weekend for me (my birthday) and I've promised so many people I'd be in so many places.

I about 95% sure that it's by rider. You do of course need to tech each bike, and if you're renting a garage at Thompson they charge by bike. At Palmer they rent by bay, and you can fit about four bikes in a garage bay.

Tony's a member here but doesn't visit regularly, so here's a mention: @ttd

Or just go to the website and ask... http://www.tonystrackdays.com

Yes, our pricing is per person. If one rider has 2 bikes, he can only ride once per hour.

More than happy to do this, all day long. Look for the short shaved-head guy with a blue and yellow R6 in the garage. Yellow group sticker.

Let her know that Thompson is really good for watching, because if you walk around you can see the entire track. Palmer isn't like that.

She can also sit in on the classroom sessions, which can teach her a lot.

The Thompson Sunday schedule is different from all others... track goes hot at noon due to town noise ordinances. But it's worth arriving a bit early; they do a track walk at about 10 am, also a really cool thing to do, especially for a newbie.

@CC Cowboy, I forgot something useful. Tony has a "Try The Track" program that might interest Sarah.

It's for people who've never been on the track before, and it's free. Basically you ride the first, follow-the-leader novice group session. Speeds are not high (street pace) but you do get to ride on the track for real and you have an instructor showing you the line. Plus a briefing. Requirements for gear are relaxed for this program. For a Try The Track session, all that's needed is a full-faced helmet, gloves, a motorcycle jacket, and over-the-ankle boots.

This is a fantastic way to dip your toe in at ZERO cost and ZERO commitment.

If you get hooked (and many do), provided the rest of the day isn't sold out you can pay on the spot and ride the full day. If you do that, however, you do need full gear and a prepped bike.

Details are here: http://www.tonystrackdays.com/catego...-the-track.htm

Follow the links to read about gear and bike prep.

Note also that Tony's bike prep requirements are considerably less stringent than some other organizations. Pretty much it's tape over anything made of glass and make sure your tail light is not visible (blue tape doesn't cut it here... pull the fuse or bulb, or use duct tape). They recommend clamping or wiring the oil filter but do not require it.

Edit: Since she's already signed up for Palmer, a Try The Track at Thompson is a good way for her to know ahead of time what to expect for that first session. First track days can be overwhelming so a little familiarity can go a long way. By the way... I'm going to be renting either a garage bay or a spot in the open shed at Palmer. A bay can accommodate up to four bikes and I'd be happy to split the space and a little of the cost if she's interested. Having someone to hang with at track days is huge and makes the whole experience a lot better.

Greg, my friend, Sarah, from Narragansett (6th generation Block Island girl) wants to go up to Thompson for the free trial. She knows everyone at Gordon's so you two might know some of the same bad actors. Can I text you her number so you can tell her what to expect?

She can ride pretty well. I put her through the test with the Harley demos. She's a mad dog on a bike. Definitely ready to slow down and get on the track.

And if you missed out on this one... might be a good time to sign up for the next event... May 28 and 29 in Palmer, MA.
Try The Track should still be available for Sarah. And if she wants to ride the rest of the day and asks nicely, it's likely they'd find a spot for her.
