Cargo shorts and flip flops, but I'm thinking about ordering some gear. Is $1000 insane for riding boots, jacket, pants and gloves??

Definitely helps with road rash, but I'd like to see the study where leather/tex saves you from a broken spine...

Anyone's opinion on Rev'it! gear?

I used to wear skinny jeans when I first started riding, but then I got some proper riding pants. Now I wear the Scorpion Women's Jewel Mesh Pants with skinny jeans underneath, but they're a little too long and loose, so I'm looking for tighter and shorter leather pants. I also own a one piece leather suit, but I've only worn it on the track.

I have the Rebel leather jacket. It's a good jacket but it's cut for guys with a belly and a barrel chest. I've lost the belly so if I ordered now I'd have to order a size 50 (size chart says I should wear a 54-56). But the construction is solid and the leather is superb quality. Added the Knox back protector and I feel a lot warmer, better protected, and generally more badass on the street. I'm getting a zipper sewn in to attach to my willow pants.

I guess it could if you have a good back protector.

And it can pretty much save you from road rash if you have good gear, I have seen pictures of some pretty bad road rash and that is not something I ever want to go through. $1000 seems pretty high for gloves, pants, and boots though. I guess it depends what kind you are getting though.

If you have $1000 budget for gear, good for you. Buying quality gear means you only have to buy it once, unless you wreck it. But then it's worth every dime where it protects you. Cheap gear doesn't hold up to normal wear as well either just from on off, flapping in the wing, bugs, grim, rain. The stitching will start to fray, and color will fade and depending on the material can loose it's protective ability.

Now, you can get tailored gear in that territory too. However, it's like buying leathers, if you're going to loose or gain weight, it might not be a good investment long term when that $600 -$700 worth of pants and jacket don't fit you or anyone else.

$200 for boots and $200 for gloves gets you into some high end stuff that will last. Shop around. Talk to people that ride see what they like/dislike about their gear. Find out if people have crashed in the gear you're interested in to see how it holds up (or doesn't). Make sure it fits you and is designed to stay on...gear that comes off won't protect you. Have someone try to pull it off you once on...you may be surprised.

What's your skin and bones worth? Think how long your skin will protect the bones, ligaments and tendons on your knees ,elbows and hands when you go sliding down the road. It's not just skin that gets ground off.

$1000 for gear is a good budget.

Keep an eye out for sales. Can save a decent amount of money.

My current setup is:
Scorpion EXO-750 helmet
Knox Aegis 7 plate back protector
Knox chest protector
Alpinestars GP-Plus boots
Alpinestare SP-1 gloves
Cortech Latigo jacket
AGV Sport Willow pants

I believe the most important factor of gear is correct fitment. If the fit is wrong it may not protect you in a crash.

Wow depressing poll. Makes our riding community look pretty foolish.

Something I noticed as I meet and talk with experienced rider:
Jeans and shoes look cool to non-riders, look silly to serious riders. Lack of gear seems to show lack of respect and skill. Hmm. The dude in the group with jeans and little princess shorty gloves seems to always be the one to go down. Hmm?

Some complain about high insurance or medical costs yet wear jeans on a motorcycle. Pisses me off to keep paying for your skin grafts and rehab.

On a less grouchy note, I should have checked twice on the poll but couldn't. I wear leather or kevlar/textile but just made myself something new, picked up some camo textiles with giant pockets and lined them completely with heavy leather. Pads go under them so they're loose but the pads stay tight. No potentially deadly stuff in my pockets. Don't look like MC pants at all.

Yep leather is hot and sweaty and gross. I have 9 leather jackets and throw them in the washer on the delicate setting, oil them up after washing, good as new, don't use soap, takes out the natural oils. Oldest jacket is 23 years and it looks like new and not stinky. Rain? Oil after or slip a rain-pant over them.

To the OP, you can get leathers without sliders and they look less racer, just get them tight so they don't slip around. I know of a good custom place, good prices and you can pick the colour so they won't look as track-like. PM me if you can't find some you like.

back protectors definitely prevent serious injury. i crashed at 50mph and walked away like nothing happened.

I tend to look at personal protection as a multi tiered approach.
Skills, Planning, PPE, and Intelligence all help to avoid injury.

unless you plan to never ride in the rain, i would get two sets of gear
and good ECE helmet, gloves, boots.

good gear does not have to be expensive. PPE is never a bad investment.

I was wanting to get the sport willow pants. I have the jacket and its great, though I will be getting something else for when it gets hotter; rode around today at 70 and it was pretty hot any time I would stop

Currently, I am just wearing regular levi skinny jeans along with my cortech boots, gloves, and sport willow jacket. I am looking into getting over pants namely the cortech GX's. Hopefully they can be used as over pants.

I wouldnt mind some leathers if they could still fit over skinny jeans, or maybe shorts. But can anyone recommend any leathers for me? I am 5'3 with a 32 waist.

I've been wearing normal jeans ever since I got my bike. Definitely not the smartest thing, and I get pretty paranoid about being protected everywhere else but not my legs.

The problem was that in general, when I go out riding, I'm going somewhere. It's not usually just out for a ride for the heck of it. So when I get where I'm going, I need to be wearing normal clothes. Overpants seemed nice at first but the more I looked at them, they look pretty hot. Not good for summer. Plus, I would need somewhere to stash them once I got to where I'm going.

In the end, I've decided to try out a pair of Rhok jeans. They're in the mail on their way to me right now. I'm hoping they'll provide a good balance of protection and convenience. Not to mention, stashing some knee armor seems a lot easier than finding somewhere to put a whole pair of pants. Or I might even be able to just leave them in the pants. I'll have to see when they arrive.

EDIT: I received the jeans today and so far I'm quite impressed. I may make a separate thread for them in the future and do an in-depth review once I've gotten a chance to wear them, but so far I'm happy with my purchase. The armor fits well in the pockets and is not very noticeable when inserted. It is also easily removed if you'd rather take it out when you arrive at your destination. I got the black color and wish it had a little more distressed look to it, rather than what is almost a solid black, but that's just my personal preference. So far they get two thumbs up from me!

I've been wearing these pants for about a month now and really like them.

http://shopping.scorpionusa.com/C55D...37725D858E0848

They work great as overpants, or by themselves. They don't look too dumb while off the bike, and I feel a lot more confident in them than a pair of motorcycle jeans. About as good as it's gonna get for textile pants IMO.

Alpinestars SMX1 shoes
Alpinestars SP2 gloves
Dragin kevlar jeans
RST cargos with kevlar and knee protectors
RST textile jacket, CE elbows, shoulders and spine

Got the lot (with an Oxford disk lock/alarm) for $950.

Also use a Shark RSR2 helmet.

ATGATT. When I take my (14-year old) daughter on the back, she often complains that I make her put on her (leather) trousers ... and jacket ... and zip them together. But, I always say "use your imagination". Imagine running, as fast as you can, then diving flat onto the road. In such an instance would you want to be wearing your gear or some jeans. Then multiply this by three, four or five and then think about what you'd want to be wearing.

I have been using the AGV Willow pants for a few weeks now and I am really liking them. You definitely can't fit any pants under them so you are either going to need to change when you get where you are going or walk around feeling like a bit of an idiot. They are very comfortable on the bike but off it they feel a little awkward.

In the summer I can see them being a little warm but I got the perforated version and they should help a lot. If you are going to be wearing them in the summer definitely go with the perforated.

I've been looking at the sport willow pants but thought I'd step it up a bit to teknic mercury pants as well as the mercury jacket so they would zip together and be 100% compatible. However, it seems that all of teknics jackets are sold out in common sizes -_-

Competition Slider Jeans $79
Body Armor Adventure $70 Ebay sale

Jeans are DEFINITELY a few sizes bigger than advertised, but are actually very nice. I normally wear 36x34 ... ordered 34x34. Waist is good, could use an 1" more off the length.

Body Armor I'm just not thrilled with. All the armor is great! I even tried it over some tighter Levi's and fit without really printing. I'm just not thrilled with the knee pad holder ... It's flipped to open on the bottom, and I struggle to keep the pads up inside the pocket.

Most of the time, the top of the knee pad is falling underneath my knee cap.

Thanks, Neal

I'm kinda late posting to this thread but it is a good one and a lot of suggestions are being thrown around as to what are a decent pair of pants for riding.

I use joe rocket alter ego pants; these are textile but have panels that zip off to expose mesh whilst retaining the padding. A good 4 season pair of pants provided that is is not too cold. these have CE rated padding on the knees and hips. I am thinking to replace or supplement the knee protection with some knee and shin protectors. I feel that in a fall, the existing knee pads may not and probably will not stay in place. these can be used as overpants including the waterproof layer. i wear 34 waist and put a large over jeans and it is not uncomfortable at all.

I got a size up and wear it as a overpants. The Pant is cut like any other European cut and looks like a regular pant. I'll throw a pair of hip armor (need t take it to the tailor and get it altered) and its good to go.

Cortech GX Air pants

I recently switched from Scorpion overpants to Cortech. The Scorpion pants were too long and baggy; the Cortech pants are a much better fit.

I just got some Kevlar riding jeans to go along with my AGV Willows on days I am actually going somewhere and can't wear the leather. I figure its better than wearing regular jeans.

Currently I wear either jeans (normal life) or slacks (work) with knee guards and tough leather chaps over 'em.

You do realize that if you lowside (most likely accident) the first thing that's going to hit the ground is your a$$, right?

Let us know how the whole "I've protected my knees but not my butt" thing works out for you if you have an off.

It's early and I haven't had coffee so maybe my sarcasm filter isn't working yet… but you seem sincere.

You're on a message board that's all about protective gear because… um…. why exactly?

Owning a leather jacket, good
"Windy feeling," great
Avoiding incredibly painful, costly skin grafts and scars that will last a lifetime, priceless.

I've been up for hours and already had 2 cups of coffee but DAMN it's still too early to see that!

I have a Teknic mesh jacket and Icon mesh pants. I still get the windy feeling.
