I own all three: leather, cordura nylon, and mesh. Use the right tool for the right job. You shouldn't ride a 500-mile day on the freeway in mesh, and you shouldn't drive 30 Mph across town in 100-degree heat with high humidity in heavy leathers.

Since I've been riding I lean more and more towards leather. My textile jackets fine when I don't wanna go around in a race suit, the mesh these days It just hangs in my closet.

I feel that textile is the best commuting material since it deals with water a lot better than leather. However, leather is the superior protection so it's better for pleasure rides when you're using the sides of your tires instead of the center.

Any examples of these kevlar mesh jackets? I'm currently looking for a new jacket since my crash/broken zipper on my favorite mesh jacket.

I have this jacket, which they no longer make anymore. The mesh is a lifesaver in the summer, especially if you are stuck in traffic.

I got a used Motoport Kevlar mesh jacket from craigslist, and am very impressed. Looks brand new, has lots of armor, reflective material, and good air flow.
It may not have anything to do with abrasion resistance, but I was talking to an EMT who worked on a guy wearing one of these jackets. He said he tried to cut the jacket off, and couldn't. He tried scissors, knives, virtually every cutting tool they had in the van, and none worked. When they got to the hospital, he apologized to the doctor for not being able to remove the guy's clothing. The doctor chuckled and told him the only way to get those jackets off was to cut the thread at the seams. Kevlar is tough! |

personally, I settled for this:
http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/a...per-air-jacket solid textile in the arms, shoulders and sides. Not the best jacket in the world, but it sure does keep me cool in the hot humid summers. I also don't hit more than 40 mph on the roads that I typically ride. |

Guys what about this? "Combined FreeAir mesh and perforated cowhide shell" Mesh front and interior of the arms, cowhide shoulders/forearms/elbow for that slide protection. And its perforated! You can see the perforated on the back too. Here's a link to the back view but its in red. And you can see it at the superstore here. I think I'm getting this. |

I doubt you will find one, but if you do it'd be used. It's been a couple of years since I got mine and that was on closeout. I checked out the S&S website and they don't even offer any mesh options anymore.

My textile protected me but I can't really say to what extent. I believe that my helmet took the extent of the damage. The only place where the jacket seemed to make contact during my crash was the elbow where I got a heat rash (whatever they're called, like rug burn), and the rest was fine. My helmet though took the brunt of the damage having sliding on practically only it and my backpack/laptop until I came to a stop. |

Every crash is different. Clearly some jackets handle high-speed slides or impacts better than others, but that is not my only purchasing criteria. I believe strongly that if a jacket keeps you physically comfortable when riding, it can help prevent some crashes from taking place.
I have a mesh jacket that I wear for about 5 or 6 weeks of the year, from end of July to early September, when temps are sweltering. It is hi-viz and has elbow, shoulder, and spine armor - but flows a heck of a lot of air. It only gets worn for my daily commute to work: several miles of stop n go city traffic with top speeds of maybe 35 mph. I don't consider it adequate protection for highway speeds, but for slow speed in the city I'm willing to take the tradeoff in abrasion protection to stay relatively comfortable.

Has anyone considered the leather/mesh icon jackets?
I'm interested to see how well they would breathe and with leather on the impact areas they should protect you reasonably. http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/i...nctuary-jacket I'm fairly interested though I think I'll end up getting an overlord down the line since I would use it all 4 seasons. |

I wanna see this Kevlar mesh... Live an in living color, my mesh jacket (the one I can see through) doesn't inspire much confidence in it being protective

This. I have two Tourmaster Flex 2 jackets and they are awesome. It can be a mesh or a textile jacket and it even has a third layer for winter. The cool thing is that the textile layer covers everything but the collar and cuffs so it looks like a brand new jacket when I put it on.
