Questions about buying a new helmet lock

My 1995 ex250 did not come with a helmet lock. I would like to purchase another one from the dealer. If I do purchase one from the dealer, could they match that key to the others on my bike or would I just have another key? Also where can I find my key code on my bike since I do not have a helmet lock currently?

Thanks

Are you talking about the helmet lock underneath the passenger seat? Not sure how different the pregens are, but most bikes I've owned have them. Post #8

Take the lock to a locksmith along with your key, the locksmith will be able to rekey it to match your existing key no problem. It's not hard to do.

The one on the passenger foot peg. What I meant was from factory it had one, but the previous owner removed the passenger pegs with the lock. I have pegs now but no lock.

How much would a locksmith probably charge? Could I just order the right lock from a dealer?

The dealer doesn't stock locks by keycode so the probability of getting the right code to match your key is approximately 1 in 1,000. Regardless of where you get the lock (new, used, dealer, etc.) you can still take it to a locksmith, they probably shouldn't charge more than $10-20 at most for changing out the wafers. It's really easy to do it on the helmet, seat, and gas cap locks.

The factory helmet lock location sux. It's hard to get your helmet on and is a chore every time. Also, unless you let your bike cool for 5 mins before fastening your helmet, it's going to melt the vinyl or padding on your helmet that toughes the exhaust. Fortunately, I'm rarely in a place when I choose to use my helmet lock.

cheaper solution. Get a 6mm hex bolt and nut and screw it into the inside side of mounting bracket on the bottom of the seat. It works great for me. nearly free.

If you wear a full face helmet get a small cable lock or gun lock (sometimes free from the local police dept) and put it through the chin guard and lock it to the bike wherever you want or where it fits.
