Possible new Bike - Deal too good to be true?
So I've been keeping my eye out for a better touring bike. I've done multiple 3-4 day trips (600-700km per day) on my ZX-6R. While not the most comfortable, it's not terrible.
I came across a rebuilt bike. The bike is a 2001 BMW F650GS with 51,000km with a rebuilt title. The price is basically so low I almost can't pass up the deal. I've done my research, which has indicated that the branded title would not be able to be registered in my province. I will have to obtain a new frame with clean title and VIN, and transfer all parts from salvaged bike over to make a new legit bike. The reason the guy is selling is because he's been told he can't register it, and doesn't want to deal with the hassle of re-titling. Has anyone ridden/owned one of these bikes? I'm looking into turning it into a Long distance sport touring bike, with the possibility of a little bit of off-road. The use will likely be 90% Highway riding, 10% off-roading. *Clarification* I'm not expecting this to be a touring bike equivalent to a Goldwing or a R1200RT. I'm looking for something more comfortable than my ZX, but with an adventure side to it. Last futzed with by Redgeneral; July 9th, 2014 at 01:59 PM. |

Not a great long-distance highway bike. 40ish hp from a single, limited load capacity, limited electrics, limited wind protection, etc. It's much better suited for folks that need off-road capability, and plan to use it quite a bit in the wilderness rather than highway-focused.

Very good to know. Wasn't sure if this model was more off-road with a little bit of highway, or the other way around.

It's better than the KLR on road, and I rode that to James bay...
People ride the KLR around the world, my friend toured Europe on her 650gs

That's fair, but the OP's own words are wondering if it is a good long-distance sport touring bike. It's not. Yes - someone can use it as a long distance adventure bike, but it's not the best tool for the job if you're staying on pavement 90% of its life. Neither is a KLR, for that matter, right?
