I thought I was sure, but the parts diagrams would clear it up right quick.

The new-gen parts diagrams are linked right here, the pre-gen parts diagram is linked right here.

I go 100 miles and get gas again. This is my practice with 600CC also.
I always leave the bike topped off for emergencies. (earthquake mobile, they shut roads down to cars all over in fires and earthquakes)

I've never ran out of gas on a bike. I don't have gauges on the ninja either.
My iphone has a distance meter and speedometer.
I record mileage on paper when I get home.

My iPad doesn't play well with online diagrams, and it is the only net connection I have right now.

Here is the pregen petcock

Interesting! I really thought that was part of the tank. Well now all it takes is someone with a new-gen tank and a pre-gen petcock to see what the issues are when they try and mate them up. I assume there would need to be some tweaking/drilling/sealing, but we'll see.

I will go look at my new bike tomorrow when it is daylight and eyeball if the attachment looks similar. If I remember right from when I had trouble with my pregen petcock they are a bit salty new, prob not worth it, but a cheap one from eBay maybe.

My fuel gauge works well and I use the trip meter to estimate mileage already, but sometimes the unexpected happens. I had one trip to work when I planned on getting gas at a station about halfway, when I pulled in they had bags on all the pumps, they were completely out of gas!

Look on the bright side, you burned calories and gave your arms a work out! Not as if you needed the workout...

Many years ago a friend of mine pushed a Triumph T100 for ten miles when the chain broke, now that is something to complain about.
