A BILL introduced by a Tory MP could make it a legal requirement that motorcyclists remove their helmets when asked to do so by shop or garage staff.

Philip Hollobone's Face Coverings (Prohibition) Bill aims to prohibit the wearing of face coverings such as Muslim veils or balaclavas in public and will also empower shop staff to insist on the removal of full-face motorcycle helmets.

The Kettering MP said the Bill was 'designed to prohibit the wearing of certain face coverings, and seeks to make it illegal for people to cover their faces in public places'.

During the Bill's second reading in the House of Commons, Hollobone said: 'It would be an absolute requirement that if, say, someone in a petrol station, a shop, a post office or a bank, wanted someone to remove their full-face veil, balaclava or motorcycle helmet, they could do so without fear of breaking any race relations or equality law.'
