Brake pads
I have a 2003 with 4100 miles on it. Its in flawless showroom condition. It was a barn find. It has been sitting in a heated garage covered for the last 6 years. It hadn't been touched since 2008. I just completed a full maintainence on it. Oil and filter, oil screen cleaning, new NGK plugs, lubed the chain, cleaned out the gas tank, new Kawasaki petcock, valve adjustment, carb removal with complete cleaning, removed air/mixture screw plugs and set up the carbs perfectly, washed the air filter, new battery. Its Lime Green and it literally looks brand new. It runs absolutely 100% perfectly. Starts on the first push of the button after 2 whacks of the throttle. Doesn't even need choke to start and I can take off immediately. Anyway... the next 3 items on the agenda are replacing the front fork oil with something a little heavier, tires and brake pads which leads me to this question. The brake pads on the bike look brand new. They have little to no wear on them at all and the bike stops on a dime. It actually has too much brake. Anyway.... is it necessary to swap out brake pads on a bike that has been sitting for the last 6 years? Do they get brittle or do they break down or get contaminated at all from sitting. I have no problem changing them... especially since I have to do the new tires anyway but factory OEM brakes are usually pretty good and I don't want to take off really good brakes and replace them with aftermarket ok ones.

Since the bike was stored in a climate controlled environment, I would just inspect the pads and rotors. As long as nothing is out of the ordinary, you should be good to go. However, I would question the quality of the brake fluid.

Agree with the above. And clean the rotors with a scotch-brite pad. Good find, good for you.
