Ninja250 Weight comparison, race prepped!
Weight difference has been mentioned before when comparing the new and old generation EX250. But as far as factual weights I haven't found any proof beyond weights stated by Kawasaki or a magazine for the motorcycles in stock trim; where as race weight is always much different.
So, my friend and I weighed our race bikes, 2004 EX250 and a 2008 EX250. Both bikes had about a 1/2 gallon of gas, both bikes have Area P exhaust systems but the 2004 has a 18" stainless muffler while the 2008 had a lighter 12" carbon-fiber muffler,, both bikes have fiberglass bodywork and clip-ons. My 2004 has a 2008 frontend and wheels and a Works shock. So then I think most would agree that these bikes are very similar Ninja250s to compare the race weight difference between the old and new generation... then calculate that into your power to weight ratio! 2004 Ninja= 310.8 lbs (151.6 rear/ 159.2 front) 2008 Ninja= 326.6 lbs (165.2 rear/ 161.4 front) |

Weighed my race bike at 306 lbs and 31hp... you'd need to make 33.2 hp to keep up!

Rexbo, ...306 lbs? How did you weigh it?
We used a brand new scale placed under the wheels. I plan on taking the bikes to use a large weigh scale for a second measurement. Where as we wanted to see what the front to rear weight bias difference was between the old and new Ninjas. I ask because the 2008 is almost stripped of non-essentials, but there is no where near 20lbs difference! How is yours so light? |

Can anyone else weigh their race bike? Please note the gas level when weighing since that is so heavy itself.
Lets get a good cross reference of accurate weights for the Ninja 250. I'm sure the stated weights will fluctuate slightly due to scales and different body work, exhaust, gas level, etc; but an honest average weight should expose itself. |

The jardine GP1 exhaust weighs under 2 lbs, getting rid of the thermostat housing gets rid of a few more lbs, small battery sheds about 5 lbs, 415 chain conversion drops another 2 lbs and cutting off random unnecessary bracketry on the bike goes a long way. Everything helps!
I weighed each wheel with a bathroom scale, and a block under the opposite tire to keep everything level. |

The biggest thing is that anvil they call an exhaust on the 08+bikes. Dump that and you should be able to shave off quite a bit.

OK Rexbo, I see how you could shave off those extra pounds. My friends 2008 was stripped down only enough to still be legal for the Ninja Cup race. Are the 250 class rules more flexible at Chuckawalla?

The rules are so much more flexible with CVMA than any race org I know. Basically do whatever you want but leave the engine/airbox alone.
It's pretty much the same rules as WSMC but you can run double bubble, aftermarket master cylinder, aftermarket calipers, ECU upgrades I believe and a few things I can't remember off the top of my head. Maybe not run naked but a few missing panels is cool. Honestly, I feel it's the riders governing over others not so much the race org. And we're all chill and understand it all comes down to skillz not so much the bike. Heck, first few races, my bike was producing more HP than Rexbo and he still beat me. So yeah, it all comes down to skillz. |

That is a good system! Hopefully next year I can do a couple races with CVMA in addition to running the season at WSMC. |

If you're lacking in skillz then yes.
I weighed 180 before the season started and dieted (sp?) to loose all that weight. |

but yeah CVMA is pretty loose with rules, because sometimes other orgs rules are a little over-intrusive. CVMA 250 production = stock fork externals, stock engine/airbox, dont cut the frame. End of story. Go as crazy as you want with every little mod but they understand in the end its not going to make or break a race class at the club level. |

I understand "250 production" is aimed to keep costs down and level the playing field. One can legally spend $1.5K+ on shocks, exhaust systems, gearing, etc but a simple $25 mod is banned. Just my

Once you have your carbs jetted you really don't need to mess with it anymore. I'm running the same jetting for Big Willow as I am for Chuckwalla. I tried messing with it because of the elevation changes but it ran worse.

I agree that once you have the right settings, you don't have to eff with the carbs. But getting that right setting can be costly. If I remember correctly from previous posts, your 250 spent at lot of time on a dyno getting fine tuned. My point is the airbox removal makes the 250 cheaper to race because it is easier to adjust the carbs yourself if the airbox is gone.

Well, that depends. If you're running the same aftermarket setup as me then you can just copy what I have.
But if something else maybe ask someone who's willing to share that info for free if not offer a few bucks or so. BTW, I'll only share if you come and race. LOL |

Yep, I contacted Dyno jet and asked them which jets to use for 700ftl vs 2000ft (CVMA/Willow) and they said leave them the same for both locations.

Those new Lithium-Ion Polymer batteries for the bikes weigh something like 2 pounds. You could drop something like 40 pounds at least from a pregen just by changing the exhaust and battery. If I ever go full track-bike on my Ninja, the battery will be the first to go. You could even run total loss without the alternator or the starter and save some rediculous amount of weight.

Mine was 250R fuel injected (asian model) which weight 146kg (322lbs for you guys) with half loaded fuel tank. I have 4kg before i got disqualify, which means i must have few litres after the race finishes.

I think it could be done.
You can get aluminum triples on eBay. Add alu clipons and leave off the bar end weights, but that's just to start. A full header with CF slipon deletes both cats. You don't need nearly all those tabs and brackets on your frame when you mount race plastics, so bust out the grinder. A LiPo battery and ignition delete will save a ton (no, not literally 2,000 lbs). No headlight with a race upper fairing stay, custom wire harness and gauges with no street crap, no side stand, no sprocket cover (do race bikes require this?), minimal coolant + reservoir delete, simple foam seat with no upholstery, no battery box/undertail, no fuse box or rubber CDI mount, delete passenger pegs and use CF exhaust hanger, aluminum race rear sets, no bar end weights, drilled rotors, chain+sprockets conversion kit, non O-ring race chain, and so much more. Heck, even shorter dog bones lowers weight a bit. You could go crazy with a carbon fiber gas tank too! Every little thing adds up and there can be a multiplier effect. For example, replacing the stock gauges means no need for the speedo gear sender and cable, so throw in a spacer and save more weight. Detab the swingarm with no chain guard or brake line holder and them drill a hole like it was the 300/EX250L swingarm. Notch the caliper holder like it was modified for the "captive holder" mod. Use only worn brake pads and rotors. OK, these are all getting silly. Last futzed with by CZroe; June 9th, 2014 at 04:55 PM. |

For reference the stock ignition weights 1.47lb.
Stripped stock upper triple weights 1.36lbs
