[motorcycle.com] - 40 Years Of Superbike Heritage At NJMP

MotoAmerica has announced that race fans will get the chance to step back in time during the MotoAmerica Superbike Championship of New Jersey event, April 29-May 1, at New Jersey Motorsports Park, as the series celebrates four decades of AMA Superbike racing. Motorcycles from the 1970s, ’80s, ’90s and 2000s will be on display to celebrate America’s road-racing heritage, including bikes once ridden by former champions Doug Chandler and Jake Zemke.

The AMA Road Racing Championship began in 1976 and provided a playing field for professional racing teams as well as a stage for manufacturers to showcase their production-based sportbikes while developing new technology along the way. Over the last four decades the series has also been a launching point for many of the greatest riders in the world. Riders such as Scott Russell, Ben Spies, Mat Mladin and Miguel Duhamel, riders who all had a hand in making some of these machines as legendary as the riders who raced them.

“Being able to have some of these iconic bikes on display is something very special.” said MotoAmerica CFO and classic motorcycle collector Richard Varner. “We’re very glad that we’re able to bring these bikes out and showcase some of the history of this great sport in America for the fans.”

Some of the bikes that will be on display throughout the three days of racing at NJMP will be the infamous “Agony of Defeat” Yamaha TZ750F seen on ABC’s Wide World of Sports, a Vance & Hines Yamaha FZR750-RR from the 1980s, Doug Chandler’s 1997 Team Muzzy Kawasaki ZX750-RR, and Jake Zemke’s 2008 Erion Racing CBR600RR AMA Formula Xtreme Championship-winning bike. Motorcycles on display from the 1970s will be provided by Scott Rehl while bikes from the 1980s through the 2000s will be provided by Pete Boccarossa.
