Will the 250r run heated liners and gloves?

I tried a couple searches for this, but can't find anything. Would investing in heated gear be a waste with our alternators, or can we power them?

I haven't picked any out yet since I didn't know if it would work at all.
But I guess my chances of running gloves only would be better then gloves and liner...

well, to know if you have enough power to run the gloves, you need to know how many watts they are first.

Someone did the math, and came up with an extra 80w - 100w max on the ninjette's electrical system for any added accessories. There's some fudge factor, because while the output of the alternator is known, the exact drain of the existing electrical devices on the bike can't be known to the same precision. Electric liners run 70-80 watts, and I'd bet gloves are at least 30 - 40 watts, so my hunch is that you could not run both at full power for an extended period without draining the battery. But with a thermostat on them that allows less than max usage/max wattage, you might be able to use them both longer.

Or, if you could switch out to HID lighting. They only draw 35W as opposed to the halogens 55 to gain some wattage.

Service manual says alt output is of 19A @ 5000rpm @ 14V.

Sounds about right, for a rated output of approx 266 watts total.

When I have the chance, I will take a reading with my Sperry clamp-on ammeter! I just checked my userguide and it works with DC voltage from 0-400 amps! That should cover our circuit!

Isn't it 12V, not 14?

Your alternator puts out more than 12V, in order to constantly charge the battery. Service manual says 40V at 4000 RPM

40vAC is then rectified and regulated to 14vDC. Anyways, G21-30, if you take an amp reading on the system it will give you the draw on the system.

I installed two 50W fog lights (a sort of necessity on the Maine coast) and the electrical system handles them just fine. I am thinking of going the HID route for the headlights and LED for everything else including the fog lights.

I have some cheap fog lights also since I work at night. I'll upload a picture as soon as I can take and upload one. With my high beams and the fogs on the battery will drain after a couple hours.

In addition the Service Manual states that @ 4000 RPM, the alternator puts out 19 amps @ 14V. So there you have it (19amps X 14v)=266watts.

I think it probably has it in multiple places. In the front section "Preventative Maint", I thought I saw 4000 or maybe 4600, but it was just before bedtime. Bottom line, still only 19 amp alternator output!

Was this ever measured? I'm looking at getting a jacket liner, and gloves.

The jacket liner is 76 watts on high (60 watts on medium, and 48 watts on low), and the gloves are 27 watts on high (only lists high). I have changed to HID lights, so that should help a little bit.

From what I can figure the pregens had 180 watts and there was said to be 60 watts in reserve. This should mean that new gens have close to 120 watts in reserve. New gens have a high beam that stays on with the low beam which erases this extra.

I have replaced my 55W bulbs with 35W HID bulbs which should leave me with 140 watts in low beam, and 105 watts on high beam. I also use a Garmin 2720 GPS which draws at max 12W (generally less would be my guess as it only uses a 1 amp fuse). That would mean I would have 128 watts in low beam, and 93 watts on high beam. I did a DIY fender eliminator and replaced the license plate lights with LEDs which should save a small amount (though there are 2 of them now).

From the looks of things I should be ok (maybe running a slight deficit when high beams are on, and heated gear is on high). I will probably add one of these just so I can monitor everything, and switch something off if I need to.

Opinions?

What brand are your liner and gloves? Do you know if you are ever discharging the battery?
