Good kitchen tool for removing bar ends.

In replacing my bars after my off road shunt, I found a easy way to loosen the red-lock holding the barends on. My wife has this little butane torch which she uses when cooking things like eggs provence or creme brule', to carmelize the sugar. It has an adjustable flame which you can adjust down to almost a pin point. I found that I could adjust the flame to where it only heated the screw and in 30seconds, I could remove the screw easily. I also found that when I reinstalled the barends, I heated the screw back up and it remelted the red locktite and holds the screws tight.

Just don't forget to return the torch to it's proper location in the kitchen!

Not many of us have something like that lying around. Any suggestions for the rest of us? I want to buy these but I don't know if I'll be able to install them. I don't have an impact driver or a burner. I don't have an electrified work area anyway (parking space at condominium) and I hear that the 12v ones from Harbor Freight aren't that great either (not to mention the additional cost, cheap as it may be).

The paint is wearing thin/wearing away on my current bar ends and they are even changing from the metallic color underneath to rusty-color as they oxidize (oddly, still smooth and shiny), so I don't really care what they look like if I heat more than the screw... so will a regular lighter work? Like one used to light a grill?

Hey Jet, I have a minitorch if you wanna borrow it. Also, to get mine off I just used a ratchet attached to a Phillips #3 after heating them. Let me know if you need help.

That'd be awesome. If I still need access to it by the time I get around to ordering those, I'll check with you to see if the offer still stands. Thanks!

Aregular lighter won't work but one of the mini jet torches will. You can pick those up a lot of different places for under $10. I just needed a phillipps screw driver to remove the barend after get it hot enough.

Use a lighter to heat the screwdriver shaft while it's in the screw. The heat should transfer....just not sure if it'll be enough.

I used a heat gun on high (~425*, I think)... I don't think it actually heated the screw thorougly enough, though, since the cordless impact driver I have didn't make a dent.

My drill (Milwaukee 8A, the thing is amazing) with a P2 bit on it, on the other hand, made pretty quick work of the screw. Just be careful to add torque slowly so you don't strip it.
