San Diego to Phoenix, AZ

Did a brief ride, from San Diego to Phoenix the other day. Was my first "long" ride I've ever done. I've always had it in the back of my head to accomplish the 380 mile journey but never took the leap of faith. So the other night as I was laying in bed I decided the next morning I would do it. The following morning I took off and rode. I'll be riding back to Daygo, of course. Meanwhile, here's my after action.

Bike:
-2012 250
-+1 front sprocket
-ZG Sport Touring shield
-Progrip 719's

Gear:
-textiles top/bottoms
-track style boots

Pretrip:
-Basic fluid/air walkthrough
-Good stretch
-Hydration and eating nuts/fruits for energy

During:
-Refilled along every major "town". Each stretch was about 120-170miles.
-If I felt uncomfortably sore I'd stop and stretch, which helped significantly.
-Looked around and enjoyed scenery which helped keep me awake/engaged. There can be some long, boring straights for miles on that route.

Lessons learned:
-Bugs everywhere on my visor and windshield
-Passing semi's can be fun
-Long rides on open roads are better than commute riding
-50mpg @ 10-10.5K RPM
-The ninja 250r has a huge, beneficial tank range
-For me: it's better to take breaks/stops while maintaining speed and distance consistently, than to beat yourself up and drain yourself inconsistently
-The ninja 250r is a lot capable than myself and many other ignorant people consider it to be
-I don't want to sell it anymore

Cheers

Whoo hoo! Congrats on your first long ride!

Sounds like you did everything safely. You're right, taking frequent short breaks is a lot better than trying to stretch out saddle time in favor of few longer breaks. Helps keep you alert and helps avoid fatigue.

Good job getting out on the road and doing it. There's a lot of fun places to go once you expand what you think your limits are.

Looking forward to more reports!

I've made the trip from Phoenix to San Diego (and back) many many times, but never on the Ninjette. It can get awfully windy up on the mountains along I-8, I've seen trucks blown off the side of the road and once a guy on a Goldwing who was leaned into the wind so hard I'd wondered if he was going to start dragging a knee ...

I may exaggerate a bit but it's something I've been nervous about trying. Maybe someday

Dam, sounds gnarly. Shoot man just get up and go! That's what I had to do. Tell you what though, it's definitly a rush going in and out of those wind tunnels when passing semis.

I've done the road from San Diego to El Centro several times and once out to Gila Bend before continuing on east. Luckily never had wind going through the In-Ko-Pah Gorge. But man it is FUN on the bike.

And now you guys make me want to head out that way before it gets to 115 going through Yuma.

My wife has been looking for an excuse to go to San Diego. Now if only I can convince her to ferry the kids in the car by herself ...

Thankfully I've been blessed with a wife that is more than willing to ferry our son while I ride multiple times, might I add! Just mount a usb charger, get a sena headset, and The two of you can chat the whole way!

Yeah the in ko pah gorge definitely a blast to ride through especially as empty as it usually is. Going through there either lets me know I'm almost to diego or gettin close to el centro. Good times. Sounds like you know your way around Nevada wolf! Where haven't you been? Lol.

<---- Anywhere that's white on the map.

Seriously, there's plenty of places I haven't been and would love to go to. I plan on seeing every state in the Union on bike (even Hawaii!), then add in all the providences in Canada.

Once I get brave, head south and see what I can find in Central and South America.

eh, I love riding, what can I say?
