They are great. The tender is not a charger. I charger supplies a continuous current. Even a trickle charge over time will heat up a battery evaporate the water and kill the battery.
The tender charges the battery to a peak voltage then turn off. When the voltage drops below a certain level it turns back on.

Get one of these without hesitation. Install the quick connect to your battery to make it super easy to use. It's been my experience that these things will add years to the life of your battery. Check the final price + shipping because they sell these at wal-mart pretty cheap too.

I use the Schumacher SEM-1562A charger/maintainer. Less than $20.00 at WalMart. It comes with the SAE lead to permanently mount to your battery as well as traditional clamps in case you want to use it on something else. The lead can come in handy in case you need to connect a heated vest. If you DO use it for that purpose, be sure to have an inline fuse for it.
I have, over the years had less than satisfactory performance from "Battery Tender" products.

I've used Battery Tenders for the last 10 years (the Tender Plus, though). They've been very solid performers for me. Also use a CTEK and have the bike on a YUASA.

They make those "Tenders" right up the block in Deland. Good company, good product.

It's about speed. A charger will get your battery back to 100% faster than the tender will. I view the tenders as a maintainer, NOT a charger.

So I have a stupid question. I wound up with a used charger/tender from harbor freight. There isnt much written on the device. Is there any way to tell if this is a trickle charger or a battery tender?

Which model is it Ryan? Does it say "float charger"? If so, it's most likely a "tender" or maintainer. I used one on my riding mower for a long time without issue until the garage took a lightning strike.

It says Floa####rger. So at some point I guess it was a float charger. I'll give it a go and see if the battery pops. The four wheeler needs a new battery anyway
