Impressive gas mileage
So I did a test, a couple friends didn't believe I was getting 63mpg on my 2005 ninja 250 while slightly "beating on it" which to me is just accelerating faster than you would if you were just out cruising.
So I filled my tank and started the beating. For the whole tank, every stop and go I ran every gear almost all the way through and even got her up above 90mph a few times. I did this for the whole tank and decided to stop the run tonight while I drove past the only gas station outside of town. Usually I get 210-215 miles out of a normal tank (not reserve) slightly "beating on it" I was at 199.0 miles tonight and didn't know how far I wanted to push it past there so I filled up and it took 3.503 gallons. This is a MPG of 56.81. And that doesn't include the mileage I was missing out on letting it warm up for a while multiple times. Therefore I am assuming that is about the least amount of gas mileage I can get, since I accelerated fast every chance I had. And I have to say, these bikes are pretty damn impressive and it makes me question if I even want to get a 600.... |

58mpg is great for riding it hard. I generally get anywhere from 50-57mpg on my new gen but I weigh 230lbs. These bikes love to be ridden hard and put away wet . Today I decided to ride mildly like a squid (fast) and it handled well.
I bought an 07 zx6r a month ago and I currently have it up for sale. That bike has a stupid amount of power which I would never need outside of a track. 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds, almost 90mph in first gear, tops around 180mph indicated. All of those stats are never needed on the street imo. If I don't get a good amount for the bike then I may end up keeping it for a while as a weekend bike but tbh the 250 handles what I need (50% commuting). The 250 is a great bike all around, especially for a full time student; it's affordable, great on gas, it has plenty of power to get you from a to b, and you can wring it's neck going WOT while staying within limits. I'm 100% positive that the 250 taught me, and still is teaching me much much more than if I started on a larger sized bike.

Honestly I would love a new gen 250. And I am thinking about it. There is a 2012 for sale here for $3400 with 26 miles that a guy won and doesn't need. I cruise a triangle of 8 miles to work, 8 miles to second job and 8 miles home. With the occasional trip to the GF's house or out and about riding with my parents. Really all I need is a 250 and might end up just taking a loan out for a brand new one instead of 3500$ for my friends r6 I was considering. I still don't really see a point in paying more for the bike, more for the gas and more for the insurance... |

This thread is focusing on economy and I think the old and new 250's provide just that along with good street performance. Having owned and still owning large high HP motorcycles other factors come into play too.
Insurance, tire mileage and tire costs, oil/filter changes, chain life. I still have my original tires on my 08 with 14,000 miles on them. My previous 135 HP motorcyle required a new rear tire between 3000 and 7000 miles and the big tires are more expensive too. My 250 chain looks like new...on performance bikes I'd be looking for a replacement about now. An oil change, about the cost of lunch. So for anyone wanting to have economical yet fun travel, I highly recommend the Ninjettes. BTW my 08 consistently gets 58 MPG in city stop and go traffic while commuting to work. You guys aren't gonna believe this but I've gotten 97 mpg on my 500... that included like a mile of coasting downhill with the clutch pulled in behind some slow semi trucks but also some spirited canyon riding. After that I got 68 mpg with split between a ton of canyons in lower gears at 7k+ rpms and some highway in 6th between 60-90mph. 60mpg average on the highway solid at 80. 45mpg around town wacking the throttle like a squid...
Just thought I'd chime in my figures with a bike with twice the displacement :P |
