dont know if this has been posted yet as it just happened yesterday. thankfully no one was injured but let this be a reminder to everyone to ride within your limits, especially in the canyons.

One of my buddies was riding there yesterday and was telling me about this. For some reason, I opted to stay home and do some oil changing and radiator flushing for my car yesterday though, but after hearing about this I'm glad I did. Brutal. Crashing sucks enough as is- I can't even imagine what it felt like to watch his bike burn away into nothing afterwords (and to add insult to injury, the embarassing, inevitable riding passenger to get home that likely followed

).

Although, what I don't understand is how exactly he managed to crash there of all places. That is to say, in the middle of the one small stretch of STRAIGHT road on the snake. What was he doing exactly to fail that hard?

Is it at all possible that a FIRE caused the crash instead of the other way around?

can't believe that nobody at all had a fireextinguisher... I was half hoping that the Integra was a ricer with one hanging on his A pillar... poor bike.. the ending was pathetic..

Newer R6 has had problems with the sides of the tanks being damaged easily in crashes due to the shape of the tanks and how they are slightly pointy on the side. The problem is so common that they actually make tank sliders for the newer R6.

My guess is that he may have lowsided and caught the side of the tank on the ground causing a fuel leak which lead to combustion from friction.

Did you watch the full video?
Someone did have an extinguisher and emptied the whole thing, and it barely touched the fire.
(I watched the video at like 4am when I couldn't sleep last night...so hopefully I'm remembering correctly!)

I don't mean teh fire dept.. by the time they got there is was a smoldering heap... I meant like before the front tire blew (I think that was what it was) in the beginning when people started pulling over..

Oh well.. as you said.. the extinguisher didnt do much anyway..

The newer R6s definitely have the tendency to catch on fire. I've seen it happen at the track - luckily, the marshalls all had fire extinguishers and the damage wasn't as bad as it was for that bike. It still took 2 people with extinguishers and a third on standby to make sure the fire was out.

Sucks for the rider.

I just looked again. Someone tried an extinguisher at the beginning of the video 0:55. Looks to be just someone who had one in his car.
However, at that point the bike had been burning for a good 30-45 seconds at least. The extinguisher didn't even come close to putting the fire out after spraying it for almost 30 seconds straight.

I'm wondering if it was the wrong kind of extinguisher maybe? Emptying an entire can on a fire that small seems like it should have put it out. Granted the fire had plenty of air and fuel, but it was small, I figured 30 seconds of extinguisher should have easily choked it out?

There are instructions on the side of a fire extinguisher...it reads "Aim at BASE of fire"....the guy was shooting the extinguisher all over the top of the bike.

Extinguisher FAIL.

From the wide shot at the end it was right in the middle between two corners, could have been going either way when it hit the ground. If you listen closely in the very beginning you can hear something slide at 3 seconds and 4 seconds.

Hard to believe that it took several minutes before someone called the fire department.

Regarding the fire extinguisher use, it was a dry chemical (you can see the residual on the ground later) so it should have been at least ABC rated, just way too small at that point to do the job.

I don't know why so many people ride there. That road is crap.
It's banked wrong all over the place, bumpier then hell and torn up all over. Not to mention frequently wet.
Also guard rails everywhere.

It seemed pretty obvious that the flames were coming from underneath, where the gas tank had ruptured when it hit the ground. If he had gone around and sprayed near the tank through that little gap between the road and the seat he might have had more bike left to haul off.

Hard to fault someone who stops and helps. I think he did go to around the bike below the cases and aimed under the bike. I just think there was gas everywhere and he couldn't get the base of all the flames. Maybe a few moments earlier would have been the difference.

Unrelated type of fire but I have seen the fire dept outside my office building putting out a mulch bed fire with 2 water based extinguishers unable to keep up with the flames, then just putting them down grabbing one hose and hitting a wider area. They were a few minutes beyond what extinguishers could do.

I found it strangely theraputic watching that video. Seeing all the people collecting around the fire and the nice cars and bikes that idled by.

If you don't watch all of it make sure you jump to the 8min mark to see the R6 being taken away. It's unrecognizable.

@Alex - I'd prefer Mulholland vids weren't all merged into one big thread. There's lots of different things that happen on that road. Just my . I like it when you merge reposts though.

This brings back memories for me, two days before my last day at work my truck caught on fire at a walmart along with a walmart trailer with ammo on it. The ammo started exploding so they shut down the store for two hours. There was four fire trucks, 4-5 ambulances and countless police cars and news stations too! It was the worst feeling ever!

Such an overreaction...

Burning ammo is not the least bit dangerous, unless it is extremely high caliber, like .50 caliber machine gun ammo.
Even then, inside the trailer it's going to be harmless.

I dug a pit and burned a dud box that was about 50lb.
Didn't really get much action other than a bunch of burst cases.
Pretty underwhelming, imo...

I found The caliber doesnt really increase the danger much. Its all in the chemical makeup and how it burns/delivers energy.

Here's a story of an epic hand shake fail

2 riders at willow springs have a great battle right up to the finish. They go through turn 1 and rider A throws his hand out to congratulate riders B with post race hand shake or fist bump. Something happens and rider A clips rider B cuasing rider B to crash. Rider B's 2006 R6 bursts into flames on contact with the asphalt. I don't remember how bad the bike was after the fire was extinguished but the moral of the story is you never trust rider A

That guy never used a fire extinguisher in his life. You're right; the extinguisher barely touched the fire. The guy was spraying in the wind...he would have more success just pissing on the poor Bike.

WHen mythbusters tested it, the 50 cal ammo went off with enough force to break the glass in the oven they were using to cook it in. Wasn't enough to punch through a trailer though.

thats one of the cool things about smokeless powder, its not really dangerous unless contained in a vessel that promotes the build up pressure.

oven might have been a small enough area for the smokeless powder to gain pressure with that amount of powder. thats when it becomes dangerous, since oven glass can break in a little as 10 psi.
