Exclamation First crash avoidance

Have 500 miles on the odometer and have just had to avoid my first crash. What is interesting about it is that it did not involve a car. It actually involved a bicycle.

I live in a "some what" of a suburb of Chicago, meaning most roads are straight. I was in a section of my town that had a few different curvy roads to practice my leaning.

As I was coming out of one lean and going straight, I saw two people hanging around a car and a bicycle circling in the middle of the road. The two guys saw me approaching and stepped back a little bit. Mind you, this is a residential road and there was actually two cars parked on each side of the street but right across from each other so it made it very narrow, where only one car could even fit.

I saw that the bicyclist went off to the side a little bit, and I thought that maybe the other guys told him to move. However, I didn't rely on that and went as far left (away) from where the bicyclist was. Right as I am coming to him, he turns 90 degrees and is just about to have a T-bone with my bike.

Before I hit the front brakes, and barely locked the rear tire, I leaned the bike in the opposite direction of this guy and then braked. He stopped his bike and when I saw him do that, I stopped heavy braking since I was already going to avoid him. We only missed each other by about 6 inches or so.

All in all, I looked in my side view mirror as I hit the horn afterwards, and it looked like he **** his pants. Probably because he is lucky it was a bike, not a car. A car would not have been able to stop in time or swerve like I did because of the two parked cars. Before I approached him, it was in the back of my head that he may pull out, so I was somewhat ready for it.

The only thing I think I should have done different is slowed down as I approached them, which I did not, I kept doing the speed limit of 25.

All in all, a good learning experience and no one was injured, though the other guy's pants may have turned brown.

Stay safe out there!

Good reminder that it's not just cars.

People with ipods seem to have a death wish around here. Dudes on skateboard especially, flying down the sidewalk when I'm turning into my driveway. No amount of load pipes would have saved his butt if I had not been paying attention.

It could have been a truck instead of a bicycle.

The result for you would have been different, but the excuse is always the same:
"Sorry,........I din't see you".

You have to be extra aloud and annoying to others since your bike is black: high beam during the day or modulator, horn, whatever it takes for people to notice you.....plus always slow down in awkward situations.

Yep, next mod to the bike is going to be a modulator for the high beam. I already changed out the horn, but since I was on top of him, I had no time to use it.

I also think the same thing went through his mind, I could have been a car or truck instead of a motorcycle.

Good job avoiding an accident. Remember not to swerve and brake at the same time if you can help it. Also, great that you acknowledge your mistake of not slowing down.

Yep, the other morning some dude on a bike came flying out of a side street turning left all the way out to the yellow lines and then dodged back to the shoulder heading into traffic. I'm not sure if he intended to cross the road but didn't take notice of me approaching on my bike until he was committed? But no matter what, if a car had been coming in that lane....

I had a 2 for 1 special yesterday and then a final slap in the face.

On the way to work, I was making a right turn onto a back road. When I turned my head, and started leaning in, I noticed this bicyclist cutting across the yellow lines, and across my lane in order to make a left turn onto the street of which I was turning off. He was also giving bicycle hand signals which I thought was even more stupid because he clearly wasn't even following the rules of the road!! I had to stand the bike up a bit earlier than I wanted and nearly crossed over to the other lane (fortunately no one was there).

Then later in the day I went to Target to get some groceries when on the way back home, bambi and his whole family decided to jump across the road (and the little ones even got lost..didn't know where to go). Had to do some emergency braking.

And then to top it off, I got my mail and it was a letter saying I have to pay $350 for an "occupation tax" for my township, one that I just paid 3 months ago!! I've only lived in the township for about 6 months now and I have to pay two years worth of tax? WTH!!
