Do tires need to match?
I recently got a 2005 250 with 5500 miles. The rear tire looks pretty new and in good condition, although a cheap brand (Cheng Shin), the front appears to be the original Dunlop. While the tread on the Dunlop looks passable, I'm noticing some cracking and the tire is obviously 10 years old and I want to replace it.
Long story short, I want to replace the front tire, and do so with a better brand. I see Pirelli MT75s online for the front online, but no one seems to have the rear in that make. Since the rear tire is in ok condition anyway, I'm thinking of just replacing the front. Being new to motorcycles, is this a stupid idea, should they always be matching? |

Be safe and replace both since you don't know how old the rear tire is. No need to get a new front that will be better than the rear.
See American Motorcycle Tire for good prices and selection. https://www.ninjette.org/wiki/Tire_options_-_pregens |

I always run a better...stickier tire on the front. What happens if the front slides out...... you land on your face. What happenx if the rear slides out... you land on your butt behind the bike and slide away from it. Tony |

You can look at the date code on the Cheng Shin to find out when it was manufactured:
http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/...ignations.aspx Tires are pretty much the most important part the motorcycle, in that if they suck, the entire bike sucks. Get ones that you are happy with and can be confident in their performance, and riding the bike will be a much better experience. I wouldn't ride it to the corner store with that 10-year old piece of crap Dunlop OEM tire on the front.

Thanks for the replies, so it sounds like it doesn't really matter if they match, will check out the rear age but most likely replace it, thanks for the link to American Motorcycle, they seem to have the Pirelli rear as well
