Kick stand spring
I know I saw a post about this problem before with a lister...driving to work yesterday when I heard a "tinkle, tinkle" and looked down to see my kick stand swinging in the breeze. Stop off at a Auto Parts store where we found a spring to fix things with some cutting/bending. Can someone check their stock spring setup and see if there is any obvious reason for the kickstand loosing the spring...spring wire to thick for groove cut in retaining pins, too slack with stand raised...?

Not sure what you mean by the "metal wrap thing"...I see 2 posts with grooves in where I presume the OEM spring curved ends slip on. I suspect (since I lost the original spring I can't tell for sure) that either the curved hook ends are too large a diameter to fully seat in the grooves, like 50%+ of the spring end is above the groove surface giving it the tendency to slide off in its "relaxed up position if you hit it accidently with your foot while riding or that the spring tension with the stand up is loose enough to knock it off again with a errant boot hit. I'd be curious also if the bottom spring hook is attached from the factory with the "open" side facing up making it more likely to be pushed off with a downward flick of your foot.
I would suggest people might want to check these areas on their spring and see if this the case...and remedy it if so by repositioning the spring, increasing the spring tension by shortening it slightly, or by safety wiring it so at least if it falls off it won't be lost. A couple wraps on the top coil connecting it to the top attachment peg with enough slack so it still moves freely will sure help avoiding watching the loose stand banging off the pavement on left handers. I know I'm obsessing about this but in 40 years of MC riding I've never had this problem cause me to go find a parts store on route to work...of course gave me a good reason to make up some time getting to work on time on my newly paved , pretty desolate 2 lane NC mountain route. |

Craig, there are actually two springs on there from the factory. They run along each other and the coiled sections mesh together. When the kick stand is in the up position, all it takes is a very light pluck with my fingertip to knock them off from the forward (frame mounted) post. The two springs barely fit in the slot, width-wise, and the slot isn't deep enough. I pinched my springs tighter here because the toe of my boot sometimes brushes against them. I plan to cut the groove deeper with a cut-off wheel.
The bike came with the ends of the springs below the frame mounted post and above the kick stand mounted post (looking at them with the kick stand up). |
