WTB - Pre Gen Valve Adjustment Tool
I'm looking for a valve adjustment tool for a pre-gen Ninja 250. The new gen tool is proably the same thing, but I don't know for sure. The part number is 57001-1220.
Thanks, Jim Moore Jax, Fl

New-gen is not the same. Pre-gen used valve tappets. New-gen uses valve shims. I haven't worked on valves on a pre-gen, but I have on my Honda that uses tappets and a valve tool isn't required to do the adjustment.

The pregen tool is basically a 9mm socket & handle with a small flat-blade screwdriver down the middle of it. The screwdriver turns/holds the adjuster screw while the socket tightens the locknut. You can use a regular socket/ratchet and screwdriver, but they have to be used separately and often times the action of tightening the nut turns the screw and changes the adjustment. Without the tool it's a lot of trial and error to get the adjustment perfect, so the main benefit to the tool is saving time. If you were really handy you could make your own tool by welding a handle to a deep 9mm socket and using a small screwdriver down through the socket.
As was said, the newgens use bucket and shim valve adjustment, for those you measure the existing gaps, remove the camshafts and take out the buckets, measure the shims, calculate what new shims are needed, install the new shims in the buckets, and reassemble the motor. |

Thanks guys, I appreciate the info. Sounds like I'm looking for a pre-gen tool. As a note, I checked the valves this week. The thought of trying to do an adjustment in those tiny spaces was so traumatizing it sent me on a tool hunt.
