yea...wring the throttle. If its under 9k rpm you're doing something wrong. I'm assuming you just got the bike...the first 'mods' you need to do are to yourself and your riding habits. Get a feel for the bike and its strengths and weaknesses. You should have no problems cruising at 85-90 mph which is plenty fast for any North American highway

If you are having trouble wringing it to full throttle without regripping then you might want to try the zip tie modification to the throttle handle.
Makes achieving wide open throttle easier, also shift above 10k.
Seriously, its fun.

For a few extra horses remove your air snorkel and shim your needles with a #4 washer.
See appropriate DIY's around the forum.

Consider moving to a 15 tooth front sprocket.

No NOT TURBO, oh now I have to go look at the turbo build (ahem, turbo talk about a build thread) that draws me in like a car crash. Don't want to look, but have to.

I'm 220lbs fully geared, no problem getting up to 70 and mingling with I-35 drivers. Just strangle the bike. Treat it like a rented mule. It won't mind.

The 250 can keep up with cars at highway speed, correct me if i'm wrong but I think it's even faster than some of the cars on the road today. like for example the new genesis coupe 4 cylinder turbo(sexy beast). goes 0 - 60 in like? 6 - 7 secs? I'm pretty sure the 250 can keep up with that.

If you are talking about keeping up with cars at the speed the traffic is moving, then you should have no problems there. The 250 will easily (and happily) do 80+ mph all day long.

If you are talking about passing power, well, there is none. Granted you may have a bit more than I had, as I weigh 270, but it still won't be much. The bike is quick enough in terms of acceleration to 60, but after that it slows considerably.

I dont know what people mean when they say they need power on the interstate. Im 185lbs and 6'3', and I run up the interstate all day long with no problems on a regular basis. Even passing cars when needed.

Now sure, Im not going to slingshot bullet pass them unless they are going 60 or less, but I have no problems passing cars even when they are doing 80mph.

Its got plenty enough power to get around those lumbering packs of semi's or the puttering grandma.

Twist the thing...it will go.

First do a 15 tooth sprocket up front ($15), then shim the carbs ($1) OR go for a pipe and jet kit (a bit more $$).

That should help A LOT.

Is changing front to 15 difficult for a bike noob?
Do you know anywhere which has a picture thread? =]
It would be much appreciated!

seems you don't have the experience to "ride with faster traffic" so just mantra i'll never be thee fastest. however as your experience and confidence grow you'll be cruising at 11k+rpm, 90mph, with enough to downshift and pass, especially after a 15T front sprocket is added. keep your warranty, be patient (smart) make your bones with your girl, then take one another where you each want to be. we're invisible out there, peace out.

If you want to go faster

I am not touching the break in part of the question, you have to decide that, those threads get huge and everyone has a different opinion. However if you want to go faster, forget shifting at 6-7k like you said and start thinking 9-11k. Running it up to 10k for shifts makes a world of difference over 6k.

250mi is already past breakin IMO. look at a photo of the torque curve for the 250... basically no power below 10k rpm. don't shift until at least 8 if you want any kind of power at all. i usually ride it between 10-12k rpm.

I was concerned about highway stuff when I was shopping around for a smaller bike like the 250. Once I got used to the higher RPM sound, I have had no issues at all. It loves the high RPMs and I do most of my miles on the highway. But I would rather be running through the twisties.

BTW I was riding in your neck of the woods last weekend. I was scouting for some good twisty roads over near N. Augusta/Edgefield area north of I20. I found one or two that were ok, but most of them had really bad paving jobs and were way too bumpy.

I've never had any problem with highway traffic.

However, I have noticed that the mere presence of a motorcycle makes some cagers act strangely. They seem to feel a very strong urge to pass or stay in front of any motorcycles they come across. I guess the motorcycle brings out some sort of competative "me first" emotions in some people.

And that's okay as long as you just let them go. But if you return this competative vibe by trying to keep pace with them you'll both be at big-traffic-ticket-speeds before you realize it.

So the question I'm asking the Original Poster is this: Are you having trouble keeping up with the normal people in the highway traffic flow, or are you trying to keep up with the crazy cagers that just absolutely have to pass you?

I'm not a speed demon by any means. I believe if I was I would not have even bothered with a 250, but if I'm going 75 on the interstate and i need to pass someone don't you think I'll need a little more juice

My only question is, why do you have to pass someone if you're/they're already going 75? If they are going 5-10 below, you'd already be passing them quite easily with a lane change and maintaining speed.

The way you're inquiring seems like it's just out of curiosity, since if this was a recurring issue you'd know you can get up to 85 or 90 if you have enough space, tuck in and dropping a gear to overtake.

75 mph

I seem to have good acceleration from about 75 to about 85 mph but then I only weigh about 145 lbs. I am going to do the gear change on mine and hope it gets just a little bit better.

I pass cars at that speed all the time with no problems. If you want to pass at that speed, you must plan accordingly. It's not instantaneous acceleration like a larger bike.

As you learn your bike, you will understand when you can accelerate and how long it will take to get up to certain speeds. For right now, I would say to take your time and get used to your bike
