2014 Ninja 300

Picked up a 2014 300 about 2 weeks ago for a decent price with a little over 4/k miles. It has a custom vinyl wrap, it looks awesome in person and not a mark on it. I will do what I did with the last 300, mod it out, do a few track days and sell it! Track season is running out and I hope to have it ready by early October. I have mods on the way!

But I can’t figure out why the dash doesn’t work. It doesn’t light up, show miles or rev. Only the right signal works on the dash. The lights work, turn signal and horn works. I checked the fuses under the seat and all seem fine and I even ordered another fuse junction box and swapped it out and still no luck. Any ideas???

Ooh! Good find! That is nice colour!
Does bike have ABS or GPS?

1. Measure voltage of battery. Voltage = ???

2. Pull every fuse from fuse box #1 and measure resistance between its legs.

- fuse #1 = ??? ohms?
- fuse #2 = ??? ohms
- fuse #3 = ??? ohms
- fuse #4 = ??? ohms
- fuse #5 = ??? ohms
- fuse #6 = ??? ohms

3. Fuse box 2 - 30-amp main fuse = ??? Ohms

Unless you bought brand-new OEM parts from Kawasaki dealer, any and all parts needs to be tested to verify they are good before using. Now you’ve got two fuseboxes and two sets of fuses to test.

4. Pull every fuse from replacement fusebox #1 and measure resistance between its legs.

- fuse #1 = ??? ohms
- fuse #2 = ??? ohms
- fuse #3 = ??? ohms
- fuse #4 = ??? ohms
- fuse #5 = ??? ohms
- fuse #6 = ??? ohms

Measure voltage at following locations with key ON.
Leave all connectors connected, just back-probe them to get voltage.

1. Battery voltage = ???
1. WHITE wire going into ignition switch
2. BROWN wire going into ignition switch
3. BROWN/WHITE wire going to clocks

Question about ABS is because many people try to disable ABS for track use. Can be done electronically or mechanically with bypassing ABS unit. But many bikes ends up getting electronically lobotomised by hacks!

Question

Non ABS model. I changed ALL the fuses, even the 2 main fuses and no luck. I am starting to think it’s the gauge cluster. It does have a slight crack. The only thing that works is the right turn signal on the cluster.

Don't skip steps.
You have can have 2 bad fuses in that mix.
Without measuring them, there's no way you can be sure they're all good (playing Russian roulette, "do you feel lucky... punk?").

Do voltage measurements at various locations.

With numbers from those tests, working clocks is just 30-seconds away...

Here is the gauge cluster with the slight crack, no moisture inside.

Great, so fuses are assumed good. i’ve found bad fuses in brand-new boxes before.

Assuming fuses are good, there’s still wiring between fuse and cluster that can be disconnected or broken. Part I want you to confirm is IF you have power going into cluster. You can go ahead and buy another cluster like you did with fusebox. BUT, if there’s wiring problem that’s not giving power to cluster, you can buy 10, buy 100 brand-new clusters to install and NONE of them will work.

Do the voltage tests and we’ll know for sure.

I opened up the gauge cluster and found corrosion from WATER 💦 on the circuit board. So the crack was leaking and it looks like water pooled there for awhile and shorted out the gauge cluster. I see this is a common issue with the 300 once water gets inside the gauge cluster. I ordered a new and will know for sure as soon as I plug it in. You have to take both side plastics and the nose piece to access the gauge cluster. What a royal pain in the arse along with the 100 screws you have to take out.. The bike will be in pieces until the gauge cluster arrives.

I received the new gauge cluster and plugged it in........drum roll please.....
it WORKS!!! The water 💦 is what shorted out the original gauge cluster. It was a pain to take the side fairings and nose piece off to swap out the gauge cluster but it’s done ✅. I have taken the bike for a spin and all is well!

Thanks for your help Danno!!!

You’re welcome!

Is there way to seal cluster to keep water out?

The crack in the screen caused the water leak, I guess you could take the cover off and seal it from the inside BEFORE any water 💦 destroys the electronics inside. The new gauge cluster works like a charm!

Have done a few upgrades on the 300, heavier weight fork oil, pre load adjusters, after market air filter, full Brock exhaust system, ECU flash done by Bauce Racing in NJ, clip ons, rear sets and Michelin RS (from my 400 with the 150 rear). Waiting for gear indicator from Healtech. Oh and R6 throttle mod.
The bike pulls very strong and sounds good! Track day next weekend at NCBIKE!!!

I am loving the full Brock exhaust and ECU flash, I had both the 300 and 400 at the track this weekend that passed. NCBIKE. The 300 pulls very strong and I saw 118mph and 116mph consistently. The other 300 with just a slip on and ECU flash at NCBIKE in June was running consistently 109mph in the straight. I was in 6th gear and didn’t hit the rev limiter, so I could have squeezed a little more out. Maybe I will keep this 300 a little longer!
