Thanks! Appreciate it. I'm hoping it'll start and run fine, but I'm worried about the fact it has been sitting for so long. Also the stock air box is gone and I'm not sure if the PO rejetted the carbs correctly.

Thankfully there's a ton of info on this forum!

I would say that is a manufacturing flaw, contacting the seller would be my first point of call.

Or, if your impatient like me, you could modify yourself, some nylon rod shaped and glued on maybe?

Have a look in the kitchen cupboard, I'm always finding usefull things in there which I can modify and repurposed, don't let the Minister of War and Finance catch you though.

For some reason they get really upset.

Thanks. I sent the seller a message and am waiting to hear back.

As far as modifications to make this work... I like what you're thinking. Maybe epoxy on a makeshift fastener that could be passed through the rubber grommet

I say drill hole and install bolt long enough to poke through grommet.

I would think it should start as long as the carbs have been properly cleaned/rebuilt. Funny you mention the airbox. When I bought my 2001 project it wasn't missing but the only thing that was there was the box itself. I went to the salvage yard and pulled an airbox that was more complete. Obviously I still needed a new filter. Yeah, the kid that had the bike before me was riding it with no filter. I really wanted to call him and ask him if he's dumb or just doesn't care. I even had to buy the strap for $17 which is a small but very important part of the air box. Make sure you have everything as I am sure you will. As far as a filter I ended up with two UNI filter's, Around $18. They're really good filters. Sometimes it makes you want to pull your hair out wondering how these bikes get so bare and naked, part-wise. They just fall into the wrong hands on occasion, and piece by piece things start to disappear off these bikes. Keep truckin' my friend. When she's done you'll love her all the more.

Anyone have any ideas on how to secure the back end of this cowl?

Thanks
Yep, just use a piece of angle iron and create a slip under of the back bar. I modified mine cause that grommet is a horrible method for securing the cowl.

Thanks for the advice! I ended up doing just that and it is working fine so far.

I messaged the seller and he is supposedly shipping a functional replacement "sometime very soon."

If the grommet/bolt fail I'll MacGyver something similar to this. Thanks for the great idea.

In that same thread someone mentioned adding velcro to help secure the cowl. I might have to do the same for the tailight and the cowl.... The light does not feel secure at all.

Thanks I appreciate your optimism! I'm worried what has been F*d up while the bike was sitting or even prior to it being torn down. The left side frame slider that was installed had rash damage from a low side. The cheap ass slider used the the side of the engine as support for the crash pin.

Also you nailed it with weird pieces missing... The fairings are eBay quality knock offs and black in color while the gas tank is red. The battery strap and top battery tray lid, one gas tank mount grommet, numerous bolts/fasteners, windscreen, seats, undertail pieces, etc etc were missing among others. Some very random parts that I'm not sure why they'd even be missing. Kind of frustrating and has led to many small orders for OEM parts.

The PO provided a DynoJet jetting kit which had a few parts missing. He "forgot" if anything had been changed with the carb but I can only hope the carbs were properly jetted and that's why the parts are missing from the jet kit.

The Area P exhaust is brand new and doesn't appear to have been ran on the bike yet as the inside of the muffle is free of any carbon build up or other signs of use. I hope he jetted the carbs when the exhaust was installed in anticipation of running the bike.

I got the bike buttoned up to try to take it for a test ride.

Aaaaaand it won't start. The battery is strong (brand new), the starter is turning and the engine sounds like it wants to start but it won't catch. I turned the idle speed way up and that seemed to help a tiny bit but it still wouldn't idle.

I was so optimistic that the bike would just run that I filled the entire tank with gas

Today I pulled the tank and drained the gas and pulled the carbs.

Any tips to get her started are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Main jet is showing to be a 98. Pilot is a 38. As far as I can tell those are the stock items. Which is weird because most of the phillips fasteners on the carbs have been replaced with hex bolts - someone has clearly messed with these before. And the bike came equipped with an K&N style air filter and an aftermarket exhaust...

I don't think the stock jetting will do. Off to read the jetting thread...https://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=10208

Cleaned the carbs and replaced the mains with 110's from the Dynojet kit. Left the stock pilots (38) as the "Stage 2" Dynojet kit only included adjustable needles and replacement main jets.

The mixture screws were at 5 turns out from full in - considerably more than the Dynojet recommendation of 3 turns out.

Carb settings:

-Main jets - Dynojet 110
-Pilot Jets - OEM 38
-Needles - Dynojet 3rd slot, one washer
-Mixture screws - 3 turns out from full in

Now the bike starts cold or hot without any issues, BUT.......

The revs hang and are slow to drop back to 1300. The initial throttle response is clean and quick, the bike revs freely, but is slow to return to idle

Any help is appreciated

Also random update...

Installed new levers, finished installing the Woodcraft clipons, and replaced the spark plugs with new OEM spec NGK's. Making progress...slowly...
