Clutch issues
To;dr: clutch suddenly has no tension
Hello, While riding home from work I went to downshift and pulled the clutch in with no resistance. I was unable to shift down and managed to pull off to the side and stalled. I crudely managed to get it into first but it would stall without any revs. I can pull the clutch in and it doesn’t “spring” back out. It just kinda sits there. I can easily push it out. Luckily I was close to a bike shop— managed to get there in first gear, told them what happened, they looked at it and came back out telling me it was a simple cable adjustment. They said “something like that should’ve been adjusted last time you were here” (I brought the bike in a few months prior) and proceeded in charging me $20. I was just happy it was fixed. I left and as soon as I got a few blocks away, same thing happened. I managed to drift and force downshift to first and stalled out on the side of the road. I was close to home and walked it the rest of the way. I’m not sure what to do an am not mechanically inclined. The cable from what I can tell is fine? I don’t know what to do. Any help is appreciated. Thank you. |

Most likely the cable is broken, while working the lever watch the other end, (on the engine's clutch cover). If the cable is indeed broken, I'd be looking for a different shop. PS; Welcome to the board

Maybe the cable broke most of its strands and the few remaining ones stretched, so it wasn't obvious it had a problem. The mechanic then adjusted it and it worked fine. It might be better to go back to the same shop and get them to replace the cable. A polite suggestion of putting the $20 already spent toward the new one might be agreeable to the shop.

Something may be wrong with clutch:
1. Cable-adjuster at lever is fully extended 2. Cable-adjuster at engine is fully extended 3. Clutch-arm is pulled in disengaged position This might be in response to broken cable stretched out with only couple strands remaining? If the clutch-arm is in that position without any cable pulling on it, there's something wrong inside, perhaps clutch springs broken or cam on arm is broken. Normal position for clutch arm is 90-degrees towards inside. |
