Anyone else think the stock muffler sounds really good?
We recently bought a Ninja 300 after owning a pregen Ninja 250 for a while. The stock exhaust on the 250 is pretty pathetic, so I was expecting the Ninja 300's sound to be similar, but boy was I wrong.
The Ninja 300 stock has a nice, throaty sound to it, and it's not overly load. It's actually quite perfect for my taste. Anyone know if I could use stock Ninja 300 mufflers on the pregen 250? If I could find a pair of them for cheap, I'd love to slip them on the 250. |

I like it too. It is heavy but I think that is needed to avoid the tin can type of noise that is common with aftermarket mufflers.
Don't know if it can be fitted to the older 250s. |

The noise you're hearing is more than likely the induction noise, which is from the airbox rather than the muffler. To a third party, the 300 sounds just as much like a sewing machine as the 250.

I personally dislike it, and agree with what Brother Michigan is saying. I thought it didn't sound bad, until a friend of mine got a 300 and rode past me on it. There wasn't much a throaty, deep sound at all. =(

stock exhaust sounds like baffled farts. what i do like with the stock exhaust, is that in high rpm's you can really hear the engine trying to go high pitch indy style.
one of the main reasons i will upgrade from this bike one day i because it doesn't have that beautiful F1 4cyl sound. pretty much the deal breaker for me, otherwise id keep it forever. now if it had a 300cc 4cyl, like some of 80's&90's cbr250rr's having 250cc 4cyls revving to the moon(20,000rpm's), that would be a different story. although some do track this platform, or use it for commuting 60+mpg's, i see this bike as nothing more than a stepping stone to a 600cc bike. |

Haha, I guess that's a good way to put it, actually.
I think compared to the stock exhaust on my pregen Ninja 250, the stock exhaust on my Ninja 300 just sounds waaaayy better. Has a deeper, grumble sound to it compared to the 250. But yeah, there's really no good way to make a parallel twin sound really good, even with an aftermarket slip-on. |

I wear earplugs. My boot hits the stock heat shield so I wouldn't buy an aftermarket pipe. It's not worth $400. You can do better things with your money, like feed some hungry people.

The elements of engine+exhaust noise that we enjoy are due to the engine's architecture, not the exhaust system.
The EX250 engine is very noise-handicapped at idle and low RPMs by its architecture: you probably know that the EX250 is a parallel twin with a 180 degree crankshaft (a.k.a. flatplane crankshaft). This architecture results in a firing order that has two pulses only 180 degrees apart followed by 540 degrees of nothing. This quick double pulse followed by a long pause sounds really bad to the human ear. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do about that, a different exhaust system will only make the exhaust sound louder or softer but it cannot change the nature of the exhaust. At high RPMs it all evens out (thankfully). At high RPMs all engines configured with even-numbered cylinder counts and a 180 degree crankshaft sound identically pleasant to the human ear. At high RPMs the EX250 has the same sound appeal as other engines with flatplane crankshafts: same as motorcycles with inline-4 cylinders and V-8 engines with flatplane cranks (like Ferraris and the new Ford Mustang GT350) |

If you wanted, you could gut the stock can and cut the internal baffle to make it a semi straight through.

Its tone is OK but thats it. Its WAY too quiet for me. Plus its heavy... Besides, between 5,000 and 9,000 it picks up a Ducati-like sound either un-muffled, or with an aftermarket slip-on.

I like the way most engines sound when they are wound up. I like the way my stock bike sounds and the muffler does not even look bad. The muffler on my CBR 250 was awful looking.
My favorite though is the crackle and pop I get sometimes get when decelerating. |

A friend of mine once suggested, to a few of us who hated the sewing machine sound...
"Drill a hole to your stock exhaust. get a fine thin wire and tight a nut inside the muffler. Each time you open up the throttle the gas will push the wire hence the hanging nut will hit your muffler's inside wall. You'll get a sewing machine made by ducati's sound..."

No stock exhaust for me. I hated the sound. It was the first mod that I did to my bike when I installed the Yoshimura slip on. Less weight and a much better sound IMHO.

To each his own I guess. I just like how it has a deep grumbly sound to it when idling, as opposed to other stock 250/300 exhausts I've heard.
