20 Oct 2012-Tail of the Dragon Trip ATTN: GA, NC, TN, KY Riders!!!!

Alright folks,

I think we are going to shoot for 10/20/12. A couple of us are going to do the round trip in one day and meet up there with one so far.

Vman1313's pictures made me really want to do the trip up there. Check out his thread http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=115010

I was thinking of taking Friday 10/19 off to go up there, spend the night in Knoxville and then ride the Tail some more before coming home. Plans aren't set in stone yet though. It's really crowded on the weekends so it's much nicer to ride on Friday.

I might be able to swing a Friday ride. This would work best for me anyway because the only way I could talk the wife into it was to spend some time in Gatlinburg after the ride.

I'd be in for the family type meet-up deal. I know someone in North Carolina I'd spend half the time hanging out with up there, and I would then like to come meet-up for a casual ride on the dragon. I would most likely stay for 2-3 days up there.

October 13-16 is my fall break, I work thursday - sunday, so I wouldn't really be able to do weekends =/

Once the leaves start falling, I'd imagine it will be very nice scenery.

Oops, Last I heard trucks were not allowed anymore....Or maybe it was truckers were not using the road anymore because it had become a known hazard. Anywho, y'all have fun I wont be able to make anymore trips this year

I'd be interested in doing this for a first trip to the mountains. Still haven't bought my bike yet though.

I hope you have plenty of riding experience. The tail of the dragon isn't noob-friendly. I suppose if you go slow enough at your own pace, it wouldn't be an issue.

Great idea, so good someone else on another forum brought it up
We have a group of 5+ 250's (and 1 ex500) meeting up the weekend of the 12-14th.
There is also another group coming from Ky Sport Riders that same weekend w/ other various types of bikes.

I'd like to see some more 250's there :P

@Eaglepilot6

I did the tail after only three months of riding experience, most roads will be safe if you go at your own pace. Last ride I went on we had a beginners and advanced group, could do the same here so everyone stays at a safe pace. I was alone when I went so I didn't feel the need to keep up with anyone.

I'm taking the 19th(Friday) off to go up there and ride around for the day, I'll leave Atlanta at 10 to avoid traffic. Then I'll stay in Knoxville in some cheap hotel, ride it some more Saturday before heading back home. For those who don't wanna overnight we can meet up there on Saturday to ride it a few times before heading back.

@fleemos - Around what time you thinking of being on the dragon on Saturday?? Around what time you think you will start heading home??
@BlueJeepYJ - You think you going up? What day? What time?

I wanna go for the two days but my Bday is Friday but I am thinking of at least riding up early on Saturday, ride the dragon a few times up and down and a couple of other cool roads that are up there, and then head home.

@vman1313 Yes, I would like to go. I dig the idea of going up Friday, but not sure if I can make that work either. It looks like roughly a 3 hour drive one way. That sure is a lot of driving in one day!

Has anyone here done an out and back in one day?

The thread I made about it was a one day thing. My GF and I left before 8, stopped and had breakfast, went to Lost Sea, did a 2 hour tour and shopping there, went to Dragon, stopped for lunch and gas, headed to Dragon, stopped at pretty places, saw 129 Harley, did Dragon, stopped at Deals Gap, hung there for a little bit looking at bikes, headed home, ate dinner at Chinese place , got home around 6PM. Neither one of us was too sore and we had a blast!!!

I am pretty sure if we left at 8AM we could stop for breakfast half way there. Then head up to Deals Gap. Ride the Dragon up then back down. We could do the circle out to Fontana Lake/Dam. Come back and grab food or something. Ride Dragon up down again, then head home on some cool roads. Grab dinner and be home before dark.

I am still not 100% sure I can but I am going to try hard to at least do the Saturday thing.

@vman1313 Haven't really set a time to get there on Saturday, I'll look to head back around 3ish. I'm guessing I'll wake up at 9, have breakfast and then head back to the Dragon. If you leave 8am we should get to the Dragon around the same time.
