Sport tourers

I have my ninja, and love it, but it's definitely not a touring bike. So, I need help finding a good mid-sized tourer that will ride two comfortabely. I like the sv650 and the vstrom the most so far, but would like to get different inputs on the subject. Any suggestions?

Older model kawasaki concours, its a bit top heavy, but she'll cruise at 70 mpg all day. done my 1st iron butt on it without a problem.

CBR600f, VFR 800, Blackbird, Fazer 600/1000 are all reliable touring machines, I don't know how much experience you have, but the bird & fazer thou may be a major step up, the CBR600f (NOT THE CBR600RR) is a capable all rounder, its pretty quick, fairly comfortable, throw a set of soft panniers & a tailpack over it (don't know how it'll fare 2 up)

How many miles would you average on the sport touring? Do you plan on doing local mountains, trips to out of town, trips to out of state? How much luggage carrying capacity? Any ideas of your ideal trips/use for one would be? All roads or take some dirt firepaths? Day or Weekend getaways or long trips out of state with stops in between?

Answering those would help me determine the type of sport touring bike you would like

i had an 05 zzr600 that was more upright than the zx6r...very comfortable bike for 2 up and long distance riding...i had to sell it because wife did not want me to have 3 bikes...lol...

I had a 2001 Concours... miserable machine for me. Hard on wrists and butt. Good power- looked nice. My vstrom was an excellent tourer. I had full hardbags on mine. I had in back of my truck and was hit throwing bike out of truck and totaling it. I should have bought another but ended up getting something else.

Just looking to do about 300-400(one way) miles a trip. Mainly to the hill country of central Texas with my girl to camp out.

Just looked at the fazer 600...daaayyyuummm i like it, i like it a lot.

I have the SV650S and I love it. Mine has the clipons, so it's not the best for long trips. But, look at the non-"S" versions and they can travel very well doing 45-55 mpg. It's got loads of power too.

I do like the naked look. Curious, did they stop making those in the us.

side note I don't think i can handle a liter bike, so 650-800 is as big as I need.

If you get the S version, get risers for the handle bars. But the 650 V-Twin has more than enough power, enough to hold it's own on a track. I would highly recommend it.

Ninja 650 with some luggage and a little work on the seat would go a long way. Literally.

A Versys is a bit more comfortable, although a little pricier.

I put thousands of happy miles on a V-strom 1000. Hard to find any faults with that bike.

I borrowed a friends bike to travel up and down the Blue Ridge Parkway with my mother on the back. 2007 FZ6... it was extremely comfortable for both of us and plenty of fun. One horsepower less than the V-strom, but you'd never guess.

Another bike to consider might be the Suzuki 650 GSXF or the 1250 Bandit/GSXF both can be had with hard luggage and typically a bargain price wise.

A naked bike will be hard work for long distances, fairings & screen keep the wind blast off you, 300/400 miles with no wind protection will be unpleasant

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've narrowed it down to either the v-strom 650 or the BMW F800ST. the concours seems to bulky and heavy. If I could, I would just get the mulistrada and be done with it, but to much money for that.

I replaced my 250 with Yamaha FZ6 (fazer) precisely for your reasons. I wanted to ride 2up with my wife, do some day trips, etc. She rides with me all the time.

Great all around bike. Loves the twisties, great commuter, great with a passenger.

I have no regrets

Plenty of people would do that on the ninjette. Maybe not so many on the new-gen, but I certainly would have no problem doing a 400 mile day on my '04 250.

I plan on doing this once I get saddle bags and a new seat, but then my girl can't go. I'm not getting rid of the ninja that would be nuts since it is so new, but I do want a bike that will ride 2 comfortably.

I recently got into the look and ride of the Honda Goldwing. If you can get the package with the twin wheels on the back even better. They are very stable (except in corners) and have many comfort features. I've noticed many riders on these bikes to be in the upper age bracket so they must last a long time. The yellow ones are by favorite since you can see them from afar. The pulsing lights (both front and back ) set these bike apart from anything on the road.

You want stabilizers (training wheels) on your motorbike...

The vstrom 650 was an excellent bike. I put maybe 12k on it before it was totalled.I am a big guy and had lots or room and more than enough extra power.... never did find out all it had. Drove from Middle ga to above St. Louis with many hours in 90 plus speeds. Never a hic-up. Never not MORE than enough power. I can't imagine what a 1000 would be like. I don't think its needed unless you have a HEAVY passenger.

Now having said that, I think that the lil Ninjette 250 is good enough to tour with. I find it very comfortable. Even with my size I found it fairly easy to maintain 85 plus mph on interstates hour after hour with the bike loaded with gear. I would take the bike across country if I had the time.

I'm talking trike. I bet there are very few crashes with those trikes. They are very stable. Besides, if you girl is in the plump zone you get better traction.

Not a fan of goldwings with or without stabilisers, not really a fan of trikes either, and I prefer ladies curvy, not superskinny but not certainly not 'plump' either...

I doubt that Busa thing has reverse! I could see the Gold Wing pulling a massive wheel and smoking a 250 off the line and then in the twisties. I think they have a 6 cylinder engine, automatic transmission, they get close to 100MPG, top end is in the 186MPH range, and girls love the comfy seat. What could be better?

At what it's designed to do it's great, i've even seen one scrape boards & stay stable, the boxer 6 is so low down keeps it well planted & able to lean (for a bus

The problem is that it's the size of a decent cage, runs a 1.8 (the size of some European family saloon engines) & weighs about a thousand lbs... That MPG looks way off & I doubt the top speed is right either (ZX-14, busa & bird are all limited to that pace by agreement to keep jap lawmakers from imposing laws reducing BHP) I'd be surprised if the goldwing was part of the world's fastest production bike club.

It has reverse gear because it needs it, trying to pull it back would give most of it's target market a coronary...

It's a full on tourer, the kind of bike that could do one side of the continent to the other, with enough luggage space to bring everything bar the kitchen sink, but it's not a sporty machine, I wouldn't think it's designed to be as nimble as any of the smaller lighter bikes the OP was suggested.

Many Gold Wings have a supplementary fuel system that boosts MPG's and top speed. What you save on gas you spend on the supplemental system

I believe the Gold Wing (3 wheeler) has the look of a modern jet fighter. Sleek, streamlined, ferocious, and very nimble. Smaller bikes might be a tad lighter but not by much. Lighter bikes are usually what they call beginner bikes because they are easier to pick up after slow speed crashes (since they aren't very fast). Sporty is in the eye of the beholder. The Gold Wing trike is one sexy bike.

MOTM - Mar '13, Jun '14	I doubt that Busa thing has reverse! I could see the Gold Wing pulling a massive wheel and smoking a 250 off the line and then in the twisties. I think they have a 6 cylinder engine, automatic transmission, they get close to 100MPG, top end is in the 186MPH range, and girls love the comfy seat.
