Question On the Move

So in about a month I will be moving from Houston, TX area to the south central part of Nebraska for a new job. I will be going from, being able to ride almost 365 days out of the year, to having to learn how to winterize the bike as well as learning how to ride on dirt roads Anyone here have much experience with their 250/300 on dirt roads? These are maintained dirt roads, but still not the concrete highways I am used to.

I'm sure Teri has some advice for you when she sees this.

How cold does it get in Nebraska? Gotta have a decent riding season still. Drain carbs and keep a tender on it.

They get down in the negatives, get some snow and ice storms, but nothing like Colorado where I grew up. Do I need to let air out of tire some too?

Where are you going to be keeping the bike? I keep mine in my garage but it's not heated and winter lasts forever here. I literally just drain the gas and keep a tender on it. In the spring it might take me a bit to get it started but she's good to go the first day.

Ninja on dirt sounds scary to me (no personal experience), but I'm sure you would do fine if you ride slow and smooth until you reach concrete. Why not invest in a dual sport bike?

I will be able to store it in my Brother-in-laws shed/barn

I have been up and down this road
https://www.google.com/maps/@40.7040...2!8i6656?hl=en

I could not keep up with my buddies in their 4X4s but I was not far behind and when we hit pavement I got ought up in 2 minuets.

Just go very slow around the curves.

what part of nebraska are you going to? it gets cold, but nothing like south dakota where I am from. Hastings has a great track if you are interested in that sort of thing.

Supersports on dirt are scary, a low powered 250 is nothing. only thing that sucks is how the road eats tires. a dual purpose is the way to go for dirt/gravel.

I will be north of Kearney. The south central part of Nebraska. I will have to check out that track. Hastings will not be that far away from me. Do they make knobby tires in2t0 sizes? That scene in mission impossible where Tom cruise the Ducati off road and you can see the tires were switched out for off-road tires. Just an idea, i will have to see exactly how much of my commute will be dirt if any. I just know that just about everywhere except for towns and highways are gravel up there

There are a lot of gravel roads, unless you live on one, you don't have to travel them.

Just three wraps of chain on the tire when it's snowing really helps to winterize it.

a dirt road here and there should not be a problem, just watch it in the turns if it is real loose stuff. Once you find out how much of your daily riding will be dirt/gravel you can figure things out a little better as far as tire selection and or getting different bike.

If I was doing a lot of gravel dirt like %40 or more I would have a dual sport or sumo for sure....I would also most likely be 30 minutes late for work every day I mean you gotta see where that trail goes...might be a short cut... right
