250r vs zx6r (insurance)

Wow...What a big difference.
If I remember correctly, I paid $251 a yr for full coverage with a $500 deductible on the 250r. Insurance on the zx6r is $798 for same coverage.

Hopefully, this will give those who are ready to upgrade an idea of what to expect.

Rider Insurance is the cheapest I've found.
I don't even want to mention progressive or geico.

Daaaayuuum... Was this same company, same discounts, no accidents in between too? I seem to recall insurance diff between 250 and a 500 was pretty negligible. Guess 600 is the tipping point?

I checked recently on supersports and it was a similar % jump for me. Strangely, the 650cc twins weren't much less expensive than supersports for most of the companies I looked at.

Thats insane. How old are you and did you take the MSF course? I am 34 and my main bike is a hayabusa and my insurance is only $560 a year, for the same coverage. I think I only pay like $640 a year total for both bikes.

According to the agent, the 250r doesn't fall into the sport bike category.

Ya that's about right.

My 750's costing me about $1350/year and that's liability ONLY.

Let's not even get into car insurance haha.

i'm going to be paying close to $1100 for the first year, but I'll get a way better rate when i renew next year cause I turn 30 and will have had my license for a year so they'll pro-rate the premium on the renewal date.

::edit:: Vince beat me to it lol.

The rate doesn't only depend on age, accident history, etc but also the state you reside in.

I faced a similar issue when I was debating between the 250 and the Yamaha FZ6R. The cheaper insurance on the 250 got me sold.

When I was 20, that was a lesson learned. Check on insurance before you buy something(454 corvette in my case)........ unless you really dont care/can afford anything they throw at ya.

I really hate people saying go see state farm. There a dam ripp off down here

I'm 43 with a spotless driving record, and I've taken the MSF course. I use a broker for insurance (who I trust) who can normally get me the best deal. Looked at State Farm, Allstate, Progressive, and a few others. Ended up with Foremost. Rate is still close to $750 a year for full coverage.

What year is your hayabusa?

I'm at $432/yr for my 250, a Gixxer 750 is $945, a FZ1 would be $1124. Not sure what a 600/650 is yet.

Ontario sucks.

My busa is an '04 limited (I'm sure the limited has nothing to do with anything)

I guess it pays to be old in Canada....$356/year full coverage everything including complete replacement value in first two years. The thing they told that made the difference was the 30 years having a motorcycle licence. Didn't even care that I had not recently insured a bike as I am getting back into it!

BTW the cost for a Versey which was my upsize chocice was more than twice. So I think displacement and vehicle cost also plays a big role!

+1

state farm and allstate are notorious for gouging people in florida. i had auto and home with allstate for 5 yrs, started price comparing, called and said i felt like i was overpaying. asked to review policies and see if premiums could be reduced (auto policy was originally written when i was 22 and homeowners at 25). they said "lower your coverage, not much else we can do". contacted a local broker, found out i was paying double what i should have been.

effin' thieves.........

But the year surely does as it affects the replacement value. Since full coverage normally includes collision and theft, this would lower your insurance costs quite a bit over a brand new zx6r.

I'm not much of a busa fan, but I can appreciate a nice bike.

Ha. There were two companies (can't remember which ones) which would not insure the zx6r. I forgot about that.

This is very true. The problem with that is the insurance company doesn't take into account that this particular year model color is very very hard to replace. In this area anyway you can't find another one. Insurance companies don't care about those things though.

WOW! $798? That is insane.

I was quoted at $270/year for the ZX10, while my ninja runs just under that. That is full coverage too.

$270? Not sure how you can get full coverage on a new ZX10 for that amount unless you get some kind of privileged discount. Or your ZX10 is not new or near new which would not really be an apples to apples comparison.

That is what I was quoted via Geico. I don't know how, but they said for me to keep two bikes, including the 250, I would pay $540-570 a year (I can't remember the exact numbers). I have a flawless motorcycling record.

Oh, and it was quoting a brand new ZX10. Of course it was just a quote. I won't believe it until I get one, and throw it on my insurance.

I pay $95 a year for my '09 250. Progressive. But not full coverage, clean license and I have had my motorcyle endorsement since 1988.

I think the year of the bike has more to do with insurance rate than cc...
No state farm around here. Have to get it thru an agent....

I don't keep full coverage on my 6R because its prohibitively expensive. At this point, it has been a worthwhile effort. First year quote was something like $1200 for a year everywhere. I have had the bike now for a couple years and have "saved" approx $2500 or so. That would have been enough to replace any typical crash damage to the bike / barring total destruction. Its a calculated risk but sometimes it makes sense. FYI I am about to be 27, have good credit, and nothing on my record.
