Having a problem
Hey guys, wondering if anyone can help me out with this. I was riding along on the freeway doing 75 mph when the engine hesitated a couple times then a few minutes later stalled out, backfired then worked fine for the rest of the ride. It seems to always have some sort of issue like that about 5-10 minutes into my ride. Sometimes it dies and I'm stuck in traffic and sometimes it'll recover like it did today. Any ideas?

Next time it happens, pull off the road and turn the bike off. Use your key to pop the gas cap. Leave it open. Then start your bike up and ride off.
not sure how to long-term fix it though tbh |

On the new gen you can drill out your gas cap vents. I imagine it's the same on the pregen.

@TnNinjaGirl there's a DIY floating around here somewhere for that correct???
There's a couple pregen newbies that are having the same problem as the OP and I was looking for that for them. I couldn't find it |

I'm not sure leaving your fuel lid open (even partially) while riding is such a good idea. Especially on a full or close to full tank...

Well, it's just to pinpoint whether the issue is gas tank vacuum or not. It would only be for one ride.
Besides, I would rather ride with an open tank than be potentially stranded on the side of the highway with a dead bike and cars flying by at 70-80mph you da man! |

True. Mine used to do this too and I could reach up and grab some choke to keep it running and then pull over (if needed) when safe. I haven't had much issues with the venting concern or the tank whine once I did the fuel lid mod.

Thanks for the info guys. I've only had this bike for about 3 weeks and it's my first sporty. I've never had this kind of problem with any cruisers. Is it a sport bike kind of issue? Also, when I bought the bike it only had 1200 miles on it so it might have been sitting for a while with the previous owner. Could the problem be some gunked up carbs and should I run some seafoam through? I've never used seafoam but it seems like a lot of people on here swear by it.

Seafoam couldn't hurt. Won't fix large problems, but can deal with smaller ones. Gas tank venting isn't sportbike specific, it affects a wide range of bikes, depending mainly on their gas tank design. Newer bikes of all types are more susceptible than older machines as the fuel systems are intended to be a bit better contained for emissions reasons. It happens to be a common issue on ninjettes.

Ok, I'll try drilling the vent holes today then go pick up some seafoam and see what happens. Thanks for all the feedback.
So went to start drilling and noticed right away that the gas cap assembly in the photos is different than on my bike and don't want to drill in the wrong places. For starters, my assembly had 7 screws, not 6 and the locking mechanism looks completely different. Last futzed with by Teasnuts; April 20th, 2012 at 09:36 PM. |

So how much Seafoam do I put into the gas tank? According to the instructions, it looks like I need to add about 4-5 ounces to my full tank. That about right?
