New Pickup - Eventual Build Thread

So I just picked this up for $500. It's a 1993 KLR650 with 20k miles on the clock. Needs quite a bit of work but I'm super excited to bring it back to life. The previous owner installed a rebuilt carb and a new gas tank, got her running well before draining it to let it sit for the past 6 months. Ran out of time and now it's my baby.

There are about 15 individual jobs that need to be done on it to get her 100% on the road again, so expect a rebuild thread once I get a couple free days. Most of it is flushing things out and putting new fluids in. Everything that needs to be done is relatively easy to do.

(The white stuff on the rear side panel is protective plastic coating from a new panel, all new plastics around!)

You can really see the size difference compared to the ninjette in the second photo. What a monster

Nice pickup for a great price. I would have bought it too. Actually looking for a cheap one someday myself.

I haven't ridden a klr but I rode the honda xr650l. Much more comfortable suspension wise compared to everything I've ridden. But the handlebars were to high on the particular one I rode, and it vibrated quite a bit. Made my toes numb.

lol, I can't say that I have ever seen a KLR supermoto, those things are tractors. Great tractors, but tractors none the less lol.

From everything I've read about KLR SM's... they are a bit of a hybrid. People will put 18" wheels on the front instead of 17's front and rear. Therefore it will have 18's front and rear. Helps with the turnability and lowers the ride height. And that's all I have found really.

Cool bike though, Especially for so cheap.

I considered converting over but it would be rather expensive compared to cleaning it up and reviving it as it is. Good thing is there's always the option afterwards! I'm like a little kid it's all I can think about at work right now lol

Nice pick up, shouldn't take too much to get it back to a bulletproof adventure bike.

So I got it jump started. Ran for about 25 seconds then it died. Optimism overload! Most likely died because of the battery being 100% dead and the fact that the carb is pretty gunked up. It leaked pretty bad until I hit it with a screwdriver and it slowed to a drip. Makes me think the float is stuck. I'm going to take it out and clean it with photos coming soon.
