GoPro HD camera

I just preordered the new GoPro HD motorsports version. I need to start uploading all the stupid driver things I see everyday, and I figure it will only get worse on my bike.

One of my biggest pet peaves is when I'm cruising down the highway at a little above the speed limit when a state trooper comes blasting past like I was going in reverse to catch a speeder (or just because it is donut time), and there are no flashing lights to worn me that he is coming at a rapid rate. Pretty sure they do this so that they can drive at 120+ and not have anyone see that they are doing it until the lights flip on, pretty sure that's when the camera with speed readout starts recording.

I was looking at that camera online just the other night. I thought they were out already? Seems like a great camera for the price.

Last thing I saw is that they are supposed to arrive the end of October, which is pretty close now. Revzilla had a decent price with a 4GB memory card and free shipping.

I should add that I also now have $10 in Revzilla bonus something or other that will credit when my order ships.

I was looking at the camera on GoPro's website. I was under the impression they were available now.

Would be nice if it really is, then I'll get in next week. All of the retail sites say shipping end of October though. Either way I'll get it eventually.

I just spent some time looking at the sample videos at http://www.goprocamera.com/hdheropreview/, specifically the Porsche and the other car racing video. I'm very impressed. I see a few things that could be a combination of compression, high electrical shutter speed, or image stabilization, but over all I am impressed. This comes from someone who has worked in the Broadcast level of TV production for the last 20 years on cameras that cost as much as $125,000 each and done some work with in car racing rigs with "throwaway" $2000.00+ cameras and RF equipment. I hope mine works as well as the ones that they used in the clips, I'm sure they picked the best of what they had for the website, but if the hardware works as it should, then I should be able to achieve the same results (or better). Too bad the snow is coming so fast that I may not have much use for it on my bike.

I've read reviews where the playback on large screen HD TVs weren't all that impressive, but for computer internet use, the vid quality is amazing.

Just throwing this out there... are there any other $300 HD camcorders currently available that I should be looking at?

Here's something that should be better:
http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/product-HXRMC1/ACC/

I'd be happier if it had 3 CCDs with the exmor clearvid sensor system, but I bet it still performs pretty well.

I was looking at this ContourHD
http://vholdr.com/contourhd/helmetcam

I haven't done much comparison with GoPro yet because once I know which one I like there wouldn't be anything else to stop me from spending $300 (which I should be spending on a Corbin seat first because my butt hurts real bad when I ride all day)

Your butt will get used to it, get a camera.

Kim you must have found this review:
http://www.actioncamerasblog.com/gop...t-hero-review/ because it is the only one I've found about lacking quality on a TV, and that review is the older less than standard definition camera. The few people that have seen the HD GoPro at some shows on the large screens there have said it is impressive. If I can't put it on my bike for a ride, I'll have to put it on the outside of my car for some testing.

Greg,

Thanks for the correction. Yes, that is the review I read. I did a search for "Go Pro HD" and that one popped up. I need to get a better pair of glasses.

Well, keep in mind that I work in this field, so when I get mine and give it my tests, my review will be based not just on the fact that it is only $300, but will be based on what they claim. They claim real 1080P resolution, and I intend to try and see if it really resolves that much, or if it is just upconverting the video. As I said, the video they have up is pretty impressive, wish I had access to the raw files, not happy with what the flash player could be doing to it.

The Contour HD seems to have the same features but a better form factor and is about the same price. Either one is probably decent except the GoPro has a water "proof" housing that is only $40 to replace when you get a stone chip in the lens area. I think they may also have the lens protector separately for less, I'll know more when it arrives.

What's the price of the group buy? I've seen them for $270 with either 4GB or 8GB card and free shipping with the pre-order from Revzilla and Helmetcam-something-or-other.

This for the motorsports package with all the vehicle specific clamps.

Depends on the card. If they are Sandisk Extreme III than an 8GB is worth at least $30. The free card really did mean nothing since I have some cards I can use. ANd in the box is almost all the vehicle mounts. I did forget the option and extra roll bar mounts (2 of them) but I think that's about it for vehicle mounts. There is a strap system for on the helmet, chest straps, and a few other oddities that you can get for them too.

Since you are doing a group buy and I assume that buy is directly from GoPro, do you have a more firm shipping date that you can share?

Revzilla just jacked the price up to $299 and no more free SD card, so it must be getting close to shipping.

Now delayed until the third week in November! Why is it that these small companies can never hit their release time tables?. Guess I can pretty much hang up the thought of getting it on the bike before April or May. Heck might be April of May before they really ship them

YouTube is starting to get a few things up about this camera. My connection at home is kind of sucking so it's hard to deal with these, but here is a review that I found that I'm trying to watch:

It's here, but no SD card so I'm going to have to clean one off before I can try it. Sent them (revzilla) an email to see what's up and expect they'll stick one in the mail tomorrow. Some parts look like decent quality, one of the mount accessories not so much quality. I'll probably have to cut that adapter out of aluminum so that it is decent. The suction cup is indeed impressive. I stuck it to part of the overly expensive and complete functionless after opening packaging and pulled as hard as I thought I dared. If I pulled harder I expect the suction cup to be damaged so I decided it was good enough.

Time to read the directions as it seems a little clumsy to navigate the menus with the 2 buttons on the camera.

The GoPro is certainly nice. I have a Kodak Zi8 that I use. I modified it with a suction cup mount, so I just stick it on the tank or on the plastics or wherever.

The only thing I hate is that $&*#&$#@!@$&*#@& H.264 MP4 .mov garbage. What a colossal pain in the butt. If you're just dumping raw video up to youtube its fine...but if you actually want to do editing .mov files suck. Radtools is probably the best mov-to-avi/wmv converter for editing.

Your options for editing if you dont use a macbrick are Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premier....both of which are priced so high Bill Gates cant afford them. So if you want to edit it without taking out a second mortgage on the house....you gotta convert them.

These MP4 files work fine in WMP, except I'm trying to look at them on an 800Mhz processor. There are a few editors that I'm going to try and load to see if I can do some simple editing on this laptop, I'll write about them after I try them... I have Avid Media Composer and FinalCut Pro at work on relatively fast computers, so I will have a method to slice things down.

And the disappointment continues.... My camera has the old firmware so things like setting it to flip the image when the camera is upsidedown isn't here. The firmware is not yet posted on their site. Also it requires class 4 cards, all I have are class 2 cards so there is another $30 unless stuff happens to be on sale this week. I'm now fairly unhappy about the lack of included card, and the lack of the correct firmware on their site.

I was going to shoot some video on my way to work, but not sure if I'll bother since I have a feeling that the video will skip because of the slow card.
