Fuel Not Flowing to Carb Bowls

Have a 2007 Ninja 250. Currently getting the fuel tank cleaned as it sat a while with gas. Noticed that when I start the engine the fuel is not flowing to the carb bowls (I had drained them first) and the engine does not start. It appears the petcock is working to flow fuel when there is vacuum. So, if fuel is not getting to the carb bowls, does that indicate the internal carb passages are clogged? Perhaps I need to pull the carbs and clean them. Not looking forward to that. Thanks.

HI Steve, it's good to meet you. If you're saying that the output hose of the petcock flows plenty of gas when you disconnect it from the carbs and crank the engine, but it's not getting to the float bowls, yes, something is wrong, like the float needles are stuck closed from gasoline turning to varnish. You can bet that if that's the case, there's a lot more to clean then the float needles and seats.

You may know, but Ducatiman here on the board does professional carb refurbs at a reasonable price. That is, if you don't want to do the work yourself.

Thanks Jim. That makes sense. Guess it's time for me to pull the carbs and learn why my next bike should be fuel injected.

I'm not sure you'd be any better off with a fuel injected engine that has old stale fuel that's turning to varnish in the system.

Except fuel doesn't evaporate in a sealed FI system. It stays liquid pretty much forever since there's no openings. I've started up cars that's been sitting for years and no fuel-problems.

That's good to hear, because I have one of those that I'll need to get running before long.

Hi Zach, verify petcock actually flows or doesn't flow petrol:

1. disconnect fuel-hose from carbs and aim into cup/bucket
2. apply vacuum to petcock's smaller hose (with vaccum pump or by sucking on hose, dangerous)

Does fuel come out of petcock?

Try testing other end of fuel-hose. Leave connected to petcock and disconnect from carbs. Then crank again.
