Bike chain broke while riding. Can't shift.

My bike chain snapped while riding, spun around, broke things but kept me safe . Problem now is that it wont go into first but will go into second while on a bike stand. I am unable to press the shifting peddle down, it just stops as if hitting something. Any ideas? I will try to add pictures/videos tomorrow! Thanks!

Noteable things:

-currently has no front sprocket on
-currently has no chain on

Just turn that output shaft by hand while you shift gears.
That way you will rotate the internal parts of the transmission so they can slide respect to each other.

Sorry im still a bit new to doing my own mechanical work. Where is the output shaft? My gut tells me its the part that connects to to the shifter lever by that bolt.

Output shaft is where the power is output of the engine. Or the one with the small sprocket on it that the chain connects to the rear wheel.

It's just like when you are sitting at a light in neutral and the bike won't go in gear, you rock it back and forth a bit, pull in the clutch, tap the lever down and it works fine.

Since you don't have the front sprocket on Motofool told you to grab the shaft and turn it.

put new sprockets and chain on, then ride, it will most likely be fine

Why do you think it's in 2nd and not in 1st? Try clicking up to see if it will go into neutral - which would mean it was in 1st.

If it is in 2nd, the transmission need to spin to change gears. Usually rocking forward and backward will move enough to allow you to change gears, but without a chain that's kinda tough.

You could start it (clutch lever in) and let the clutch out for a second to spin the transmission, then try shifting it again.

If you broke a chain on a Ninja 250, you missed some clues that things were not in proper order. The chain on a Ninja 250 is pretty low-stress compared to most cycles.

The other day, you posted about trying to get the sprocket cover off, was that before or after the chain broke?

You need to turn the motor to changes gear effectively. Put the sprocket and chain back on and you should be good, or at least we'll have eliminated one possibility.
