1000km service - valves
I just took my bike in for the 1000km service and everything checked out OK. I asked if the valves were within spec and the dealership said they don't open up the bike if everything seems OK when they test ride it. Maybe I'm imagining it but the ticking sound (which is always there at lower revs (3K)) seems louder that usual this week. How much ticking is normal? Anyone have a sound file of what a ninja should sound like?

1st valve check isn't until 7,500 miles for the new-gen bikes. It was the pre-gen (2007 and earlier) that had a recommended check at 600 miles. Some ticking is normal, it's a relatively noisy valvetrain.

I hear ticking on mine between about 3500 - 6000 RPM but not always and somewhat dependent on throttle position. As alex said it's par for the course and nothing to worry about. If it was louder than your exhaust then that's another issue.

Of course I cant say without looking at the bike .But ticking from the timing chain Via the timing chain tensioner seems a common thing with these bikes. What you want to listen for is a sudden change in an engines sound. If it is always making a little noise thats OK
I have had about 6 of these engines apart at 7500 miles and none needed any adjustment. At 1000 miles you are better off keeping them out of there. |

The sound is commonly called "Kawi Tick"
