Very high revs with choke

So after shimming, I started up the bike with the choke. After I got the air out of the gas lines the bike started to idle really high-roughly 4-5k rpm. I turned down the choke to around 2, and then off completely. I turned it back on to see if the problem persisted and it did. Everything runs great, the choke just seems to have a bit more authority now...is this a normal occurrence after shimming?

at what rpm does your bike idle at after it is completely warmed up and the choke is completely turned off?

The bike idles fine without the choke once warmed. It was at almost 2k from the factory, I turned it down to 1250. I just assume since I raised the needles, when the choke is on, there is more fuel flowing through the system, therefore giving me a higher idle. I'll also check the choke cable freeplay.

I think you're okay and that you are correct about the raised needles raising the choke fast idle limit.

however, you don't need to idle at 4-5k and I always try to adjust the choke once the bike is started so it idles at about 2500 during warmup, until the bike can run w/o the choke. It takes a few times adjusting the choke lever during warmup to keep the bike around that 2500 mark.

my bike idles high with full choke as well. I find that if I don't give it at least 5 to 10 min to warm up that my bike can die on me or loose power when I give it gas going from a full stop.
the bike doesn't really idle well if the choke isn't at full and will usually die if lkeft like that for 30 sec or so.

adjust the choke so it idles a bit. it's not an on/off switch... there is some adjustability with the choke lever.

sounds like your bike needs to be shimmed to get rid of that dead spot right off idle.

yea, it only happens if i don't warm up the bike. after 10 min of full choke or riding it doesn't do it. its scary because it give me enough gas to get into an intersection then just dies out when i'm in the middle of it. however if i feel it doing it and I pull the clutch in the bike won't die...
when I first start the bike (depending on outside temp) I usually can't have it at anything other then full or it will put a few times and then die...
It didn't do this the first week I had it, started at about the 500km mark

yes, full choke when you start, but after it has started, to can gradually increment it back so it doesn't rev so high. you can also ride off with the choke on until the engine is warmed up... just don't forget to turn it off after the bike is fully warm.

I wanted to thank you for this statement, Kelly... Embarrassing though it is, having never driven/ridden a carbed vehicle before, I honestly didn't realize that - saw it in a thread you posted in a month or so ago and it's been a huge help during warmup.

Yea, I fixed the idle problem. It turned out that when I re-tightened the diaphragm covers I moved the choke bracket over just a bit. I wiggled the wire and it re-seated itself in the ferrule.
